What the Social Security number is
The Social Security number (NUSS) is the identifier Social Security assigns to each person. It's required before starting work and for any affiliation procedure.
NUSS vs affiliation number
- NUSS: identifies you to Social Security, even before your first job.
- Affiliation number (NAF): generated with your first registration as a worker.
For most procedures, what you're asked for is the number on your Social Security documents.
How to get it online
- Go to Import@ss (portal.seg-social.gob.es).
- Find "Request the Social Security number".
- Attach your ID document (DNI/NIE) and follow the steps.
