What is the CCSE?

The CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España — Constitutional and Socio-cultural Knowledge of Spain) is an exam set by the Instituto Cervantes that tests your knowledge of Spanish society, culture, the Constitution and the organisation of the Spanish state. It is compulsory for obtaining Spanish nationality, along with the DELE A2 (unless you are from a Spanish-speaking country).

Structure of the CCSE exam

Task 1: Knowledge of Government (10 questions)
  • The Spanish Constitution of 1978
  • Territorial organisation: autonomous communities, provinces
  • Powers of the state: legislature, executive, judiciary
  • Fundamental rights and duties
Task 2: Socio-cultural knowledge (15 questions)
  • Cultural and historical heritage of Spain
  • Notable figures from history, science and culture
  • Cultural references: festivals, traditions, gastronomy
  • Basic geography of Spain

Constitution and organisation of the state
  • Spain is a parliamentary monarchy (Art. 1.3 CE)
  • The King is the Head of State and the President of the Government leads domestic and foreign policy
  • The Cortes Generales (Parliament) are made up of the Congress of Deputies and the Senate
  • The Constitutional Court is the supreme interpreter of the Constitution
  • Spain has 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities (Ceuta and Melilla)
Geography
  • The longest river in Spain is the Tagus (Tajo) (the most voluminous is the Ebro)
  • The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean
  • The highest peak in Spain is Teide (3,718 m)

  • Día de la Hispanidad (National Day) is on 12 October

CCSE dates 2026

Examination sessions are published at examenes.cervantes.es/es/ccse. There is usually one session per month except in August.


Tips for passing the CCSE

1. Study the official manual

Download the free CCSE preparation manual from the Instituto Cervantes.

2. Do practice tests

3. Focus on the Constitution

Of the 25 questions, 10 are about the Constitution and the organisation of the state. This is the highest-weighted block — master these topics first.

5. Practise the format
