One goal, many names

Access to protected housing is full of acronyms. Clarifying them helps you know what you can apply for and avoid ruling out options through lack of information.

VPO — Officially Protected Housing

The classic term. Housing with a regulated maximum price for sale or rent, classified as protected for a period. It can be publicly or privately developed.

VPP — Public Protection Housing

The name used by some regions, such as Madrid. In practice it is very similar to a VPO: regulated price and income requirements.

Affordable housing

A scheme aimed at rental below market price, designed for middle incomes that cannot access the open market but exceed social rent limits.

Social rent

Aimed at people in a situation of economic vulnerability. Very low prices and specific requirements, often with a social services report.

The key: watch them all

Because the same person can fit into several schemes, the smart move is not to limit yourself to one. Enrol in the applicant registry and watch the calls for all the ones that interest you.

GovEasy Monitoring lets you track new protected housing developments in your city and emails you, so no scheme slips through.

Preguntes freqüents

Are VPO and VPP the same?

They are very similar concepts. VPO (officially protected housing) is the traditional term; VPP (public protection housing) is the name used by some regions, such as Madrid. In both cases it is housing with a regulated price and access requirements.

What is the difference between affordable housing and social rent?

Affordable housing is offered for rent below market price for middle incomes. Social rent is aimed at people in a situation of economic vulnerability and usually has lower prices and stricter requirements.

Which one should I apply for?

It depends on your income and whether you want to buy or rent. It is worth enrolling in the applicant registry and watching every scheme, because one person can meet the requirements of several and multiply their options.
