What you need to have on hand
- Certificado FNMT installed in your browser (or DNIe with its PIN and reader).
- DNI/NIE and its date of validity/issue.
- Mobile that receives SMS in Spain.
- Email address you actually use.
- A compatible browser. If you use DNIe, have the reader software installed.

Step by step
- Online registration: go to https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/registro.html and click “Registro con certificado o DNIe”.
- Identification: if you use FNMT, select your certificate in the browser and accept. If you use DNIe, insert the card, choose DNIe and enter the PIN.
- Contact data: enter mobile and email. You'll get an SMS with a code. Type it to confirm.
- Registration complete: you're now in Cl@ve. If you want to use Cl@ve PIN, install the app (Android/iOS) and link it with your DNI/NIE and the date of validity.
- Activate Cl@ve Permanente (optional): go to https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es identified with Cl@ve, open your Cl@ve section and activate Cl@ve Permanente by defining a password.
- Cl@ve Firma (optional): from your Cl@ve area in Carpeta Ciudadana, activate Cl@ve Firma if you need to sign documents on sedes.
Time-saving tips
- FNMT is easier than DNIe if you don't remember the PIN: with the installed certificate it's a couple of clicks.
- Check the mobile before accepting. Without SMS there's no registration or PIN.
- Cl@ve PIN app: activate it straight away and test it on any sede (for example, https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es) to confirm PINs arrive.
- Store your Cl@ve Permanente password in a password manager. It can expire for security and you don't want to be caught out.
Common mistakes that can derail the process
- DNIe PIN blocked: this is not a website issue, it's the PIN. Update it at a Punto de Actualización del DNI before trying.
- Expired certificado FNMT: if the browser rejects it, check validity; if it expired, renew it at FNMT before registering.
- Wrong mobile number: one wrong digit and the SMS goes to someone else. Double-check.
- Fake/unused email: you put an email you don't read and then miss notices and recovery. Use one you actually check.
- Browser quirks with DNIe: if it fails, try another browser or reinstall the reader drivers. Sometimes Edge/Chrome work better than Firefox with some readers.

- 2.Identify yourself with your certificado FNMT in the browser or with DNIe (enter the DNIe PIN when asked).
- 3.Verify/enter your mobile and email, accept the terms and confirm the registration with the code sent by SMS.
- 4.Download the Cl@ve PIN app (Android/iOS) and link it to your DNI/NIE and date of validity so it can generate PINs when you need them.
- 5.If you want a fixed password (Cl@ve Permanente), go to https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es with Cl@ve, open your Cl@ve data and activate Cl@ve Permanente (you'll be asked to set a password).
- 6.Optional: enable cloud signing (Cl@ve Firma) from your Cl@ve area at https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es if you need to sign documents on sedes.
- DNI or NIE in force (number and date of validity/issue)
- Certificado digital FNMT installed in your browser or DNIe with its PIN
- Operative mobile number in Spain (you will receive SMS)
- Email address you use (you'll get the notice/activation)
- Compatible browser and, if you use DNIe, reader software installed and correct PIN
The mobile is the key
If you change number and don't update it, you'll lose Cl@ve PIN access and will have to update details from Carpeta Ciudadana. Without SMS there's no access.
DNIe without PIN = wall
If you choose DNIe and don't remember the PIN, you won't be able to register. Renew the PIN at a Punto de Actualización del DNI before trying.
Cl@ve Permanente isn't “forever”
The Cl@ve Permanente password expires periodically for security. You may be forced to change it; set a reminder.
Correct email and mobile or drama
If you mistype the phone or email, the SMS and notices won't reach you. Check them before accepting and correct them in Carpeta Ciudadana if you made a mistake.
Can I register in Cl@ve just with the certificado FNMT?
Yes. Go to the registration page, choose “con certificado o DNIe”, sign and confirm with the SMS. It's immediate and gives you the advanced level.
Do I need to be empadronado or have the mobile in my name?
They don't ask for padrón or mobile ownership. What matters is that the number receives SMS, because that's where the codes arrive.
I don't get the SMS, what do I do?
Check coverage/SMS blocks, that the number is correct and that your inbox isn't full. If it's still not working, change the number at https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es and repeat the registration.
Can I use Cl@ve on two mobiles?
Yes, the Cl@ve PIN app can be installed on multiple devices associated with the same number. If you change number you'll need to update it first.
Is Cl@ve Permanente mandatory?
No. Cl@ve PIN is enough for almost everything. Cl@ve Permanente gives you a fixed password and access to Cl@ve Firma if you activate it.
And if I don't have a certificado or DNIe with PIN?
You can register by video call or in person, but that's a different process. With certificado/DNIe it's the fastest and doesn't need appointments.
