Procedure 9: activate additional security in Cl@ve (advanced level and Cl@ve Firma)

Without a digital certificate, you depend on in-person appointments. We guide you.

Use this to upgrade your Cl@ve to advanced level and enable Cl@ve Firma, so you can sign online procedures without the FNMT certificate. Ideal if you already use Cl@ve PIN but need to sign serious stuff with AEAT, Seguridad Social or your comunidad.

Guía completa

What you need to have to hand
  1. DNI (with date of validity) or NIE + TIE (with número de soporte and date of validity).
  2. Mobile that receives SMS and that you have with you.
  3. Email you can access.
  4. Domicilio fiscal correctly updated (if you go by carta).
  5. Cita previa if you prefer registro presencial (AEAT or Seguridad Social).
Documentation
  • Original document: DNI or TIE, no photocopies.
  • Número de soporte (for TIE): it's on the front, starts with a letter and 8 digits.
  • Carta con CSV (only if you request it): it arrives by postal mail.
  • Appointment confirmation (if you go to an office): print or show the PDF on your phone.
  • Phone and email: these will be your contact credentials in Cl@ve.
Step by step
  1. Go to https://clave.gob.es and check Registro/Gestión for your level. If possible, log in with Cl@ve to see details.
  2. If you don't have nivel avanzado, decide: carta or presencial.
  3. With the CSV from the letter or after the presencial visit, return to clave.gob.es and complete the registration: validate mobile by SMS and email.
  4. Enable Cl@ve Permanente and then Cl@ve Firma in Gestión. It will ask you to create/confirm a password and will send a code to your mobile.
  5. Do a real test: access your expediente at the AEAT or submit a simple written form to check you can sign with Cl@ve Firma.
Time-saving tips
  • If your domicilio fiscal is not up to date, update it at the AEAT before asking for the letter. Avoids bounced mail.
  • Appointments are released early and at the start of the month. If you don't see slots, try at 08:00.
  • Use Chrome/Edge and turn off blockers. Avoids silly portal errors.
  • Have the date of validity and the número de soporte ready. One wrong digit and the system can lock you temporarily.
  • If you go presencial, bring the original document. No original, no service.
Common mistakes that can ruin the process
  1. Requesting the carta with an out-of-date domicilio fiscal: it won't arrive and you lose weeks.
  2. Confusing Cl@ve PIN with Cl@ve Firma: then a procedure requires signature and won't let you proceed.
  3. Entering the wrong date of validity or número de soporte: the system blocks attempts after a few failures.
  4. Changing your mobile and not updating it in Gestión: you stop receiving SMS right when you need to sign something urgent.
  5. Going to the appointment without the original document: back home and another appointment needed.
  1. 1.Go to https://clave.gob.es and, under Registro/Gestión, check whether you’re at basic or advanced level. Log in with Cl@ve if you already have it.
  2. 2.If you’re not at advanced level, choose how to upgrade: carta (letter) or presencial (in-person). For presencial, book an appointment at https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es (service “Registro Cl@ve”) or at https://sede.seg-social.gob.es (atención presencial).
  3. 3.If you choose carta: request the sending from https://clave.gob.es using your DNI/NIE, date of validity and mobile. Wait for the postal letter with the CSV at your domicilio fiscal.
  4. 4.When the letter arrives, go back to https://clave.gob.es, open Registro/Gestión and finish the advanced registration by entering the CSV, and validate your mobile by SMS and your email.
  5. 5.With advanced level, enable Cl@ve Permanente and then Cl@ve Firma in the Gestión section of https://clave.gob.es. Confirm with your password and the one-time code sent to your mobile.
  6. 6.Test it: open your expediente at https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es or submit a simple document to verify you can sign with Cl@ve Firma.
