What you need to have handy

1. DNI/NIE/TIE valid and well scanned on both sides. If your TIE is old plastic and shiny, avoid reflections.
2. Cl@ve avanzada or certificado digital/DNIe. If you only have Cl@ve básica, it can fail at signing.
3. Spanish mobile and email you check daily. They'll send codes and notices.
4. Authorisation for a representative (only if someone else files it) and the DNI of the representative.

Documentation

1. Identity document: DNI or NIE/TIE. Upload both sides in PDF/JPG and make sure the number, date and your photo are readable.
2. Proof of protección internacional (if applicable): upload the current resolution/card.
3. Contact details: phone and email. Without them you can't activate the card later.
4. Representation authorisation: if a third party handles the process, the signed authorisation and their DNI.

Step by step

1. Check if the convocatoria is open at https://bonoculturajoven.gob.es. If there's no "Solicitar" button, you must wait.
2. Get Cl@ve avanzada if you don't have it: book an appointment at a Punto de Registro from https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/registro/Como-puedo-registrarme.html. Go with your DNI/NIE and they'll activate it on the spot.
3. Start the application at https://bonoculturajoven.gob.es with Cl@ve. Fill your details exactly as on your ID. Any letter or accent wrong can trigger a requirement.
4. Attach files: upload DNI/NIE/TIE front and back. If a representative acts for you, attach their authorisation and DNI.
5. Sign and submit. The website gives you a justificante/expediente PDF. Save it like gold.
6. Respond to requests: if they ask for corrections, you have 10 days to upload what's missing. Don't leave it to the last minute.
7. Card activation: when approved they'll tell you if it's a tarjeta virtual (app) or física (collection/activation instructions). Follow the steps exactly.

Time-savers and tricks

1. Use Chrome on a computer. The site behaves worse on Safari/Firefox and on phones.
2. Scan at 200–300 dpi and keep a clean PDF/JPG. If each file is under 4 MB, even better.
3. Clear file names: "DNI_anverso.pdf", "DNI_reverso.pdf". Avoid weird characters and accents.
4. Do Cl@ve in person even if online registration is available. You avoid signing errors on the application.
5. Check the establishments map before spending: https://bonoculturajoven.gob.es/establecimientos. You avoid blocked payments for non-participating shops.

Common mistakes that will mess up your application

1. Uploading only one side of the document. They'll request the other side and you'll lose days.
2. Mismatched data (name with two surnames in different order, accents). Copy exactly what appears on the document.
3. Cl@ve nivel básico: failed signature and frozen form. Fix: in-person registration.
4. Leaving it to the last minute: the website overloads on opening and closing days. Try odd hours (early or late) and avoid Fridays.
5. Spending on non-allowed categories: they can cancel your card and demand repayment. Read what the convocatoria allows.
