Apply for asylum or international protection in Spain
If you fear returning to your country, this is where you apply for international protection (asylum or subsidiary protection). It lets you stay legally while the case is processed and, from month six, to work.

- 1.Gather your account and evidence. If you're at a border (airport/port), go to Policía de Fronteras and say you are requesting asylum. If you're on Spanish territory, go to the Comisaría de Extranjería in your province and declare your intention to request protection.
- 2.They give you (or they schedule) the application interview. In the interview you tell your story in detail and hand over copies of your evidence. They will take your fingerprints and personal data.
- 3.They give you a resguardo de solicitud (the white receipt). Keep it safe: it identifies you as an applicant and protects you from removal while valid.
- 4.They will call you for fingerprints/document. After admisión a trámite, you go to Policía for your applicant card (the ‘tarjeta roja’ at first without work authorisation).
- 5.At 6 months from the application date, you renew the card so it shows authorisation to work. Renewals are usually every 6 months at Policía.
- 6.If you change address, notify it in writing at the same Comisaría where you applied so you don't miss notifications.
- 7.You wait for the decision from the Oficina de Asilo y Refugio. When it arrives, go to Policía for the next steps: fingerprints for the TIE if granted, or sign notifications and consult appeals if it's unfavourable.
