Research stay in Spain (EX-00 stay authorisation and TIE)
If you’re coming to a Spanish centre to do research for a limited time, this is the route. It lets you apply for the stay authorisation (EX-00) and then get the TIE so you’re legally identified here.

What you need to have to hand
- Convenio de acogida signed by the Spanish entity (dates, project, whether there is funding).
- Passport with sufficient validity (all pages scanned clearly).
- Cl@ve or digital certificate to submit via Mercurio.
- Health insurance without copayments valid in Spain for the whole stay.
- Proof of financial means (scholarship, funding letter or your bank statements).
Documentation
- EX-00 completed (prepared inside the online sede).
- Passport complete.
- Convenio/letter from the centre detailing the research and duration.
- Health insurance without copayments.
- Proof of means: bank statements or funding letter.
- Criminal record and medical certificate if your stay exceeds 6 months (legalised/apostilled and sworn translation if not in Spanish).
- Proof of payment of fee 790-052 (authorisation of stay for studies/research).
- For the TIE: 2 photos 32x26 mm, fee 790-012 paid (~16€), passport, resolution and, in many comisarías, empadronamiento.
Step by step
- Confirm your case: you’ll research at an entity in Spain and it fits a temporary stay (not a long-term residence).
- Submit online via Mercurio: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/mercurio/
- Log in with Cl@ve or certificate.
- Upload the PDFs (watch file size and names) and generate/pay the 790-052.
- Answer requirements on https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es if they ask for missing items. Don’t leave it to the last day.
- Resolution: if you’re abroad, request the stay visa at your Consulate with the resolution. If you’re already in Spain on a legal stay, skip to the next point.
- TIE appointment: book a fingerprints appointment at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplustie/
- Select your province and “TOMA DE HUELLAS (Expedición de TIE)”.
- Take 790-012 proof paid, photos, passport, resolution and empadronamiento if requested.
- Fingerprints and collection: they take fingerprints and give you a receipt. The TIE takes 3–5 weeks; collect it at the same police station.
Time-savers
- Scan everything clearly (B/W if the file is huge, but readable) and name files clearly:
pasaporte.pdf,convenio.pdf, etc. - If your stay >6 months, sort criminal records and medical certificate with apostille and translation well in advance. These cause the biggest delays.
- TIE appointments usually drop early. Try at 08:00 with a clean browser and persistence.
- If the centre funds you (scholarship/contract), get a signed funding letter. It avoids fights over means.
- Keep everything in your Carpeta Ciudadana: notifications, fee receipts and confirmations.
Common mistakes that will mess things up
- Insurance with copayments or a cheap “travel” policy: they’ll reject it.
- Mixing regimes: applying EX-00 when you need residence for researchers (EX-11/UGE). Ask your centre first.
- Not applying for the TIE within 30 days: fines and delays. Police don’t forgive deadlines.
- Documents without apostille or translation (if >6 months): predictable denial.
- Not paying the 790-052 or paying the wrong epígrafe: your file gets stuck.
- Uploading huge or unreadable files to Mercurio: guaranteed request for correction and lost weeks.
- 1.Check it fits: you’ll do research at an entity in Spain and you have a convenio de acogida signed with dates and conditions.
- 2.Go to https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/mercurio/ and submit the EX-00 application with Cl@ve or digital certificate; attach passport, convenio, insurance, proof of means and (if relevant) criminal and medical certificates. Generate and pay the 790-052 fee.
- 3.Watch notifications on https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es: if they ask you to correct something, upload the missing docs within the deadline.
- 4.With a favourable resolution: if you were outside Spain, apply for the research stay visa at your Spanish Consulate presenting the resolution. If you were in Spain on a legal stay, go to the next step.
- 5.Once in Spain (or if you already were), book a fingerprints appointment for the TIE at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplustie/ choosing your province and “TOMA DE HUELLAS (Expedición de TIE)”.
- 6.Go to the police station with passport, resolution, photos, empadronamiento (if requested) and proof of payment of fee 790-012 (~16€). They’ll take your fingerprints.
- 7.Collect the TIE at the same police station when they tell you (usually takes 3–5 weeks).
- Passport valid (all pages in a single clear PDF copy).
- Convenio de acogida or letter from the Spanish research centre stating project, dates and whether there is funding.
- Private health insurance without copayments, valid in Spain for the whole stay.
- Proof of financial means: recent bank statements or a letter from the centre assuming expenses/funding.
- Criminal record certificate from the country where you lived the last 5 years (if the stay exceeds 6 months), legalised/apostilled and with sworn translation.
- Medical certificate as required by the International Health Regulations (if the stay exceeds 6 months), legalised/apostilled and translated.
- Proof of payment of fee 790-052 (authorisation of stay for studies/research).
- 2 passport photos 32x26 mm for the TIE, and a certificate of empadronamiento if your police station requires it.
Tight deadlines
You have 30 days from entry into Spain or from the resolution to apply for the TIE. If you miss it, fines of 100–500€ and you may be left without your card on time.
Criminal and medical certificates (only if >6 months)
If your stay exceeds 6 months, they require criminal records and a medical certificate with apostille/legalisation and sworn translation. Without these, they can deny or block the visa.
TIE appointments, a daily scramble at 08:00
Appointments at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplustie/ disappear fast. Slots often drop early morning. Try several days, a clean browser and patience.
Don’t mix up regimes
This is EX-00 (stay). If you come with an employment contract as a researcher or for a longer period, look at residence for researchers (Ley 14/2013, EX-11/UGE). Mixing regimes will make you repeat steps.

Can I work while on a research stay?
You can carry out the research activity at the host entity. For other paid activities outside that framework, you need a compatible work authorisation. If your centre funds you, state it in the convenio.
Do I have to get a TIE for sure?
Yes, if your authorisation is for more than 6 months. It’s processed at the Police with a fingerprints appointment and fee 790-012. If your stay is up to 6 months and you enter with a visa, usually there’s no TIE.
Can I bring my partner or children?
Yes, there is a family stay for students/researchers. It’s processed in parallel with their own application (linked to yours) and requires insurance/means for everyone. Better to apply together to avoid problems.
How much money do I have to prove?
If the centre doesn’t fund you, use the IPREM monthly as a reference for covering living and housing costs. If you have a scholarship or funding letter, include it; that usually suffices.
What health insurance is acceptable?
Private, no copayments, full coverage in Spain for the whole stay. Travel policies with tiny limits get rejected. If the centre covers you, present a detailed certificate.
What if I ask for the extension late?
You can submit within the 90 days after expiry, but you risk a sanction and being irregular if you delay. Sensible move: apply online (EX-00) 60 days before expiry to avoid stress.
What’s the difference with residence for researchers (Ley 14/2013)?
The EX-00 stay is for time-limited stays linked to a centre. The residence for researchers (EX-11/UGE) is for research contracts and longer projects, with different requirements and procedures.
