- Financial means: bank statements for the last 3 months and/or scholarship.
- Tourism: new return ticket or evidence of force majeure (medical appointments, reports, etc.).
- Studies: enrollment, certificate of attendance/results and, if relevant, empadronamiento.
- Proof of payment of the 790-052 (epígrafe prórroga de estancia).
Step by step
- Check your clock: tourism before day 90; studies 60 days before (and up to 90 days after with possible fine).
- Fill in the EX-00 and sign. It’s on the Extranjería site (Modelos > EX-00).
- Pay the 790-052. Generate the form, select prórroga de estancia and pay at the bank or online. Save the PDF with NRC/stamp.
- Submit in Mercurio: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/mercurio/inicioMercurio.html. Choose Estancia/Prórroga, upload EX-00, passport, insurance, financial means and the receipt.
- No e-channels? Book at Extranjería: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html and hand everything in at the counter.
- Wait for the decision. Watch your Carpeta Ciudadana and Mercurio. If approved and your stay is >6 months, fingerprint appointment (ICP+, TOMA DE HUELLAS) and pay 790-012.
- Pick up the TIE when they call you. Check dates and save a digital copy.
Time-savers
- Upload PDFs one file per type (full passport in one PDF) and name them clearly.
- If your reason is exceptional (tourism), provide strong evidence: reports, appointments, cancelled tickets with proof.
- Submit before expiry: reduces the chance of fines and speeds things up.
- ICP+ works better with Chrome and early in the morning. If there are no appointments, refresh at odd times (07:55, 14:55).
Common mistakes that can wreck your procedure
- Applying late: you risk sanction or automatic denial.
- Insufficient insurance or one with strange co-pays: they’ll reject it without blinking.
- Fee paid incorrectly (wrong epígrafe) or without the receipt: inadmissible.
- Weak reason for tourism: “I want to stay longer” doesn’t count.
- Forgetting the TIE after approval (studies >6 months): no fingerprints, no card.
- 1.Check the timing: tourism before you hit the 90 days; studies within the 60 days before expiry (they accept up to 90 days after, but you can be fined).
- 2.Fill in and sign the EX-00 (on extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es > Modelos). Save the PDF ready to upload.
- 3.Generate and pay the 790 code 052 fee (epígrafe prórroga de estancia). Pay online or at a bank and keep the receipt.
- 4.Submit the application online with Cl@ve/certificate in Mercurio: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/mercurio/inicioMercurio.html (choose Estancia/Prórroga). Upload EX-00, passport, insurance, financial means and the fee receipt.
- 5.If you can’t do it online, book an appointment at Extranjería (ICP) and hand it in at the counter: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html (province > Trámite de Estancia/Prórroga).
- 6.Check notifications in your Carpeta Ciudadana and in Mercurio. If approved and your stay is >6 months (studies), book fingerprint appointment for TIE and pay the 790-012 at Policía: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html (TOMA DE HUELLAS).
- 7.Collect the TIE when they call you and check the dates. If denied, consider an appeal or leave within the deadline to avoid worse trouble.

- Valid passport (all pages, and the visa if you had one)
- Health insurance covering Spain for the whole extension period requested
- Proof of financial means (recent bank statements, scholarship, maintenance letter)
- Return ticket or proof of the exceptional reason to stay (force majeure, medical appointment, humanitarian reasons) if you came as a tourist
- Enrollment/continuation of studies and certificate of attendance/results if you are a student
- Certificado de empadronamiento if you have been at a fixed address for months

Deadlines that kill
Turismo: request before day 90. Estudios: 60 days before the end; up to 90 days after they accept it but with a possible fine. Out of time they can open a sanction or force you to leave.
‘I just want to stay’ won't work
For tourism they only extend for force majeure, humanitarian reasons or well-documented exceptional causes. Prepare solid proof or they’ll reject it.
90/180 rule
Even if they extend you, the Schengen 90/180 counting still applies. Don’t try to force exits/entries to ‘reset’ it — it won’t fly.
Fee is non-refundable
The 790-052 is paid even if later denied. Double-check documentation before you press pay.
Appointments that drive you mad
ICP+ is hit-and-miss and appointments get snapped up. Try early, use Chrome. Save screenshots if the site crashes.

When exactly do I have to ask for the extension?
Tourism: before you hit 90 days. Studies: within the 60 days before expiry; they accept up to 90 days after, but with a possible sanction. Don’t push it — if it expires you get into trouble.
Can I leave Spain while it’s being processed?
With tourism, leaving usually cancels the extension and you may lose re-entry if you already used the 90/180. For studies, request an Autorisation de Regreso if you need to travel while waiting for the TIE.
Can I be fined if I miss the deadline?
Yes. You can be sanctioned for irregular stay and even forced to leave. If you’ve already passed it, apply ASAP and expect to pay a fine if imposed.
Can I extend if I came visa-free (Schengen-exempt country)?
Only for exceptional, justified reasons. If there’s no solid motive (medical, humanitarian, force majeure) they usually won’t grant it.
How much money do I have to prove I have?
There’s no single public figure for all offices. Provide enough statements to cover stay and accommodation; for studies they usually look at IPREM monthly guidance. The clearer, the better.
Can I do it without a digital certificate?
Yes, by submitting in person with an appointment at Extranjería (ICP+). But online with Cl@ve/Mercurio is faster and leaves a clear trail of what you uploaded.
