Renewal of stay for studies (student NIE)

What you need to have to hand

1. Cl@ve or certificado digital that works (if it fails, try Chrome in incognito).
2. Pasaporte valid (all pages scanned).
3. TIE/NIE actual and your número de expediente if you already have one.
4. Stable connection and readable PDFs (under 10 MB per file is ideal).

Documentation

1. Modelo EX-00 completed and signed.
2. Matrícula/admisión for the new study period (must cover the dates you apply for).
3. Certificado de aprovechamiento from the last year (or a centre report if you had gaps/changed plans).
4. Seguro médico in Spain with no copayments, no waiting periods and valid for the whole requested period.
5. Means of subsistence: bank statements, scholarship, guarantee or maintenance letter; show you have enough to live on.
6. Pasaporte in force (all pages) and TIE current.
7. Tasa 790-052 paid (prórroga de estancia por estudios).
8. Empadronamiento recent (for fingerprints, they will ask for this).

Step by step

1. Go to Mercurio Extranjería: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/mercurio/inicioMercurio.html and ID with Cl@ve or certificado.
2. Choose Prórroga de estancia por estudios. Fill in EX-00, sign it and upload it with the rest. No blurry photos: everything in PDF and readable.
3. Generate and pay the tasa 790-052 (prórroga) and attach the resguardo. If the platform won’t generate it, make the payment separately and upload the receipt anyway.
4. Submit. Download the justificante with CSV and save the expediente number. This protects you if there’s “silencio positivo”.
5. Watch DEHú: https://dehu.redsara.es. If they request documents you have 10 days to fix it. Upload missing files from the same expediente.
6. Once granted, book cita de huellas at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/. Pay the tasa 790-012, bring a passport photo (carnet), empadronamiento, pasaporte and the resolución. You’ll collect the TIE in 30-45 days.

Tips that save time

1. Upload each document as one PDF and name them clearly: “Pasaporte.pdf”, “Seguro.pdf”, etc.
2. The insurance is the usual fail: no copayments, no franchises and full coverage. If unsure, ask the insurer for a detailed certificate.
3. If you don’t see notifications, check DEHú weekly and check your email spam folder.
4. Fingerprint appointments drop early in the morning. Have everything ready and keep refreshing the page.
5. Moved city: update your empadronamiento before fingerprint day or they will bounce you.

Common mistakes that can mess up your application

1. Filing out of time and getting hit with a fine: it’s annoying and avoidable.
2. Insurance with copayments or small-print exclusions like hospitalization: instant refusal.
3. Not proving academic progress (not even one line from the centre): they’ll request more and you lose weeks.
4. Uploading cropped photos of documents: they’ll ask for them again and the clock keeps ticking.
5. Travelling with an expired TIE without an Autorización de Regreso: real risk of not being able to come back.
