Renew your TIE (card) after renewing your authorisation or because it expired

Renew 60 days before expiry. If it expires without a slot, you become irregular.

Use this to renew your TIE when your residence/work/study authorisation has been extended or when your card itself expires. For people who already have a NIE and an authorisation that is valid or being renewed within the legal timeframe.

Guía completa

What you need to have ready
  • Cl@ve or certificado digital to process in Mercurio if you must renew/extend the authorisation.
  • NIE and passport (new and previous if you renewed it).
  • Current TIE even if it’s expired.
  • Time and patience to catch a fingerprints appointment.
Documentation
  1. Valid passport and a photocopy of the data page.
  2. Current TIE and a photocopy.
  3. Favourable resolution of renewal/extension (or resguardo de presentación if you filed within the deadline and it’s still pending).
  4. Certificado de empadronamiento recent (usually <3 months).
  5. 2 photos 32x26 mm white background, no glasses/hat.
  6. Modelo EX-17 completed and signed.
  7. Tasa 790-012 paid (correct concept for issuance/renewal of TIE) and the receipt.
Step by step
  1. Check the timeframe: 60 days before and 90 days after expiry. If your authorisation (work, studies, non-lucrative, family reunification…) needs renewal, do it in Mercurio with Cl@ve: https://mercurio.delegaciondelgobierno.gob.es/mercurio/modoAcceso.html and upload the required documents.
  2. Wait for the notification of the resolution in Mercurio/Carpeta Ciudadana. With a favourable outcome (or the resguardo filed in time), you can go for the TIE.
  3. Pay the tasa 790-012 at https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790_012/ choosing the TIE concept that fits your case. Print the receipt.
  4. Fill in EX-17 with your details and current address.
  5. Book a fingerprints appointment at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html (province of residence, procedure POLICÍA – Toma de huellas (Expedición de Tarjeta)).
  6. Go to the appointment with everything: passport, TIE, resolution/resguardo, padrón, photos, EX-17 and the tasa receipt. They’ll take fingerprints and give you a resguardo.
  7. Pick up the card in about 3–6 weeks. Some comisarías require an appointment to collect; others don’t. Bring the resguardo and your passport.
Time-savers
  • Appointment slots appear at odd hours: try very early, around midday or late at night. If your comisaría has none, check others in the same province.
  • Pay the tasa online and bring two copies of the receipt. If you pick the wrong concept, you’ll have to redo it.
  • Exact photos 32x26 mm. Photo booths sometimes use a standard size that fails. Photo shops know the TIE size.
  • Fresh padrón: if your padrón isn’t updated, update it first. Avoid wasted trips.
  • If you need to travel and your TIE is about to expire, request an Autorización de Regreso in good time.
Common mistakes that can derail the process
  • Mixing up renewing the authorisation with renewing the card: if your permit itself is still valid (e.g. long-term), don’t use Mercurio; go straight to fingerprints.
  • Paying the wrong tasa (NIE/certificate instead of TIE). Money and time lost.
  • Turning up without the resolution or resguardo when you’re still within the deadline: they won’t take your fingerprints.
  • Expired padrón or wrong photo size: back home you go.
  • Missing the 90-day window: risk of fine and having to start the permit from scratch.
  1. 1.Check the timeframe: you must be within 60 days before or 90 days after expiry. If your authorisation itself needs renewal/extension, do it in Mercurio (https://mercurio.delegaciondelgobierno.gob.es/mercurio/modoAcceso.html) using Cl@ve/certificado and upload the required docs (contract/vida laboral, proof of funds, enrollment/insurance for studies, etc.).
  2. 2.Wait for the notification in your Carpeta Ciudadana/Mercurio. If the outcome is favourable or you still have the resguardo within the deadline, you can proceed to get the card (TIE).
  3. 3.Pay the tasa 790 código 012 online at the Policía site (https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790_012/) choosing the correct concept for issuance or renewal of TIE for your case. Download/print the receipt.
  4. 4.Fill in Modelo EX-17 (https://extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es/ficheros/Modelos_solicitudes/mod_solicitudes2/17-Formulario_TIE.pdf) with your details, NIE and current address.
  5. 5.Book a fingerprints appointment with the Policía at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html (procedure: POLICÍA – Toma de huellas (Expedición de Tarjeta) and choose the province where you are empadronado).
  6. 6.Go to the appointment with passport, current TIE, resolution or resguardo, padrón, photos, EX-17 and the paid 790-012 receipt. They take your fingerprints and give you a resguardo. About 3–6 weeks later you go back (somecomisarías require an appointment to collect) to pick up the new card.
  • Valid passport (bring the previous one too if you renewed it) and a photocopy of the data page
  • Current TIE (even if expired) and a photocopy
  • Favourable resolution of the renewal/extension of your authorisation (or the resguardo de presentación if it’s still being processed and you filed it on time)
  • Certificado de empadronamiento recent (less than 3 months)
  • 2 passport photos 32x26 mm, white background, no glasses or hat
  • Modelo EX-17 completed and signed (Solicitud de TIE)
  • Payment receipt for tasa 790 código 012 (correct concept for issuance/renewal of TIE)
