Can I request someone else’s marriage certificate?

Generally marriage entries are public, but if they include sensitive marginal notes they may restrict access. If they deny it, they’ll ask you to justify legitimate interest or provide an authorisation.

Which one should I request: literal, extract or plurilingüe?

For extranjería and notary use, they almost always ask for literal. For use in countries in the Convenio de Viena, ask for plurilingüe in the language you need. The extract is a summary and sometimes isn’t accepted.

Will they give it to me straight away?

If it’s digitalised and you log in with Cl@ve/certificado, immediate download. If not, the Registro Civil processes it and sends it by post: from a few days to several weeks depending on the office.

Do I need apostille or legalisation?

If the country isn’t in the Convenio de Viena or doesn’t accept the plurilingüe, they’ll ask for a literal and then legalisation/apostille. Check the specific requirement of the country before choosing the type.

I married in the Church, does that count?

Only if the canonical marriage is registered in the Registro Civil. If it isn’t registered, you must register it first and then request the certificate.

I don’t know the exact date of the marriage. Can I still request it?

Yes. Put an approximate date and the municipality/Registro Civil. If you have tomo and folio it speeds up the search a lot; without them they may take longer to locate it.

Do they send it by email?

If the entry is digitalised you download a PDF with CSV and electronic signature. If not, they send it by postal mail to the address you provide.
