Request an additional supplement to your pension (mínimos or brecha de género) at the INSS

What to have ready

1. Cl@ve PIN/Permanente, certificado digital or a working DNIe.
2. Número de expediente of your pension (on the resolución) or access to Tu Seguridad Social.
3. IBAN in your name. If the account is shared, you must appear as an account holder.
4. Be clear which supplement you’re asking for: mínimos (for low income and residency) or brecha de género (for children and a disrupted career).

Documentation

• DNI/NIE and, if applicable, permiso de residencia.
• Renta: last tax return or certificado de imputaciones from the AEAT (if you’re asking for mínimos).
• Income/pensions: proof of other pensions (include foreign ones), payslips, rental income.
• Empadronamiento reciente (for mínimos based on residence in Spain).
• Libro de familia or certificados de nacimiento (brecha de género).
• IBAN (bank certificate or statement showing you as account holder).
• Apoderamiento if you act for someone else (Registro Electrónico de Apoderamientos).

Step by step

1. Go to https://tramites.seg-social.es/acceso/solicitud-y-tramites-de-prestaciones-de-la-seguridad-social.html.
2. Log in with Cl@ve, certificado or DNIe. If the site is slow, try Chrome/Firefox on a PC and disable blockers.
3. Choose your prestación and select the correct trámite. In observations write clearly: “Complemento a mínimos” or “Complemento para la reducción de la brecha de género”.
4. Fill in income, household and residence data (for mínimos) or children and career data (for brecha). Attach the required PDFs.
5. Sign and submit. Download the justificante (CSV). Without it, claiming later is a pain.
6. Follow the status at https://sede.seg-social.gob.es (Tu Seguridad Social). If they ask for more papers, upload them through the same trámite.

Time-savers

• Put everything in clear PDFs with sensible filenames (renta_2024.pdf, empadronamiento.pdf...).
• If you have a foreign pension, get an annual certificate with gross amount and currency right away. They will ask for it.
• For mínimos, pull the certificado de imputaciones from the AEAT if you don’t do a tax return: avoids back-and-forth.
• The empadronamiento should be no older than 3 months. If it’s old, they’ll reject it.

Common mistakes to avoid

1. Not declaring small incomes (rent, benefits). They cross-check and then you’ll have to repay with surcharges.
2. Bank account not in the pensioner’s name. Guaranteed hold-ups.
3. Unreadable attachments or crooked photos. INSS won’t guess what it is; they’ll request it again.
4. Asking for large retroactivity without basis. It usually won’t fly: effect is normally from the month after you apply.
5. In brecha de género, both parents claiming for the same child. Only one parent can get it: clarify this from the start.
