What you need to have to hand

1. Cl@ve, certificado digital o DNIe that works (and the PIN).
2. Resolución de tu pensión or the case number and your NIF/NIE.
3. Libro de familia or certificados literales de nacimiento for each child.
4. If there’s adoption or children born outside Spain, the resolutions and the legalisations/translations required.
5. If you are a man, evidence of impact on your career: reductions of working hours, excedencias for childcare, employment interruptions, custody rulings, etc.

Documentation

• Identity: DNI/NIE. If someone files for you, an authorisation or power of attorney.
• List of children: libro de familia or literal certificates from the Registro Civil.
• Pension: recognition resolution or case details.
• Adoptions / foreign births: court resolution and registrations with apostille/translation if required.
• Male applicants: everything that proves career harm due to fatherhood.
• Bank account: the INSS usually pays into the same pension account, but have the IBAN ready in case they ask.

Step by step

1. Go to the Sede: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es and log in with Cl@ve.
2. Tu Seguridad Social: open your pension record. If you see “Solicitar complemento por brecha de género”, click it.
3. Fill the application: state number of children, details and attach the certificates. If you’re a man, briefly explain the impact and attach proofs.
4. Not seeing the option? File an escrito via the Registro Electrónico Común: https://rec.redsara.es (Organismo: Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social (INSS); asunto: “Solicitud complemento por brecha de género”). Attach everything as PDFs.
5. Register and save the receipt (registration number / CSV). Without that there’s no record.
6. Notifications: check https://notificaciones.060.es and the Sede. If they ask for subsanación, reply in time attaching the missing docs.
7. Decision and payment: when it’s recognised, check the payment on the next pension payment. If there are errors or a denial, move to reclamación previa.

Tricks that save you time

• One PDF per block: merge all child certificates into a single PDF; the Sede sometimes rejects too many separate attachments.
• Submit in the morning and use Chrome: the INSS site crashes less then.
• Vida laboral: if you’re a man, attach your vida laboral even if the INSS can access it. Avoid extra requests.
• Keep copies of everything: save PDFs and the registration receipt. It helps if you need to appeal.

Typical mistakes that mess up the process

1. Uploading blurry photos of the libro de familia. Always send a clear PDF.
2. Not proving foreign adoptions with legalisation/translation: direct denial.
3. Trusting subsanación deadlines: if you miss the 10 días, they archive the file.
4. Submitting to the INSS when your pension is Clases Pasivas: they’ll send it back and you’ll lose weeks.
5. Assuming you’ll get retroactive pay by default: unless the INSS erred, the supplement starts from the month after you file.
