Additional pension supplements (minimums and gender gap) – INSS
Procedure to apply for or review the supplements added to your contributory pension from the INSS (complemento por mínimos and complemento para la reducción de la brecha de género). Useful if you get paid below the minimum or have children and meet the requirements for the gender-gap supplement.

What you need to have ready

- DNI/NIE. If you represent someone, a signed authorisation and their DNI/NIE.
- Resolución de pensión or the pension expediente number and Nº de Seguridad Social.
- Declaración/borrrador de la Renta, bank certificados de intereses, rental contracts and other pension proofs: everything that adds to income.
- Libro de familia or certificaciones literales de nacimiento (brecha de género).
- Certificado de empadronamiento colectivo if requested to prove cohabitation.
- IBAN and a proof of account ownership.
- Estado civil up to date (certificado de matrimonio, fe de vida y estado, sentencia de divorcio/separación…).
Step-by-step
- Log in to Tu Seguridad Social: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/sede/tuss/acceso and identify yourself with Cl@ve/certificado/DNIe.
- Go to Mi pensión > Solicitar o modificar complementos. If it doesn't show, use the Trámites/Consultas section of your expediente and open a request specifying the supplement you want.
- Complete the income fields (yours and, if applicable, your partner's). Attach the Renta, bank certificates and the rest of the proofs in PDF/JPG.
- If it's for the brecha de género, add libro de familia or certificaciones of the children and any other evidence requested. Check dates match your employment record.
- Review the summary, sign and download the justificante with CSV. Keep copies of everything.
- If you go in-person, book a cita here: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/sede/sede/Inicio/Ciudadanos/Cita-Previa and bring originals and copies.
- Monitor the status in TUSS. If there's a requerimiento, upload the missing documents ASAP.
Time-saving tips
- Upload clear PDF documents with obvious filenames ("Renta_2024", "Intereses_banco"). You avoid requerimientos.
- If you live with a partner, include their income too. If you don't provide it, the INSS may block the complemento por mínimos.
- In a rush? Submit online and, the same day, book a cita in case you need to bring originals. Cancel the cita later if not needed.
- Keep the CSV and take a screenshot of the submission page. That receipt saves you if there is any mess.
Common mistakes that can mess up the process
- Not declaring all income (even €20 of bank interest). The INSS cross-checks with the AEAT and can deny the supplement or claim back overpayments.
- Submitting late: retroactivity is usually up to 3 months. Each month you wait can be lost money.
- Not reporting changes (a new job for your partner, rental income, inheritances). If you don't inform them, they can reclaim undue payments.
- Uploading blurry photos or cropped documents. Expect a requerimiento and weeks of delay.
- Going to the office without a cita. You might get refused entry and waste the morning.

- 2.Go to Mi pensión and choose Solicitar o modificar complementos (mínimos o complemento de brecha de género). If you don't see it, use the Consultas/Trámites mailbox for your pension inside TUSS.
- 3.Fill in the income details for your economic unit (yours and, if applicable, your spouse/partner's) and attach the documents in PDF/JPG.
- 4.Review the summary and sign the application electronically. Download the justificante with CSV; keep it safe.
- 5.If you prefer in-person, book a cita at INSS (Pensiones y otras prestaciones) here: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/sede/sede/Inicio/Ciudadanos/Cita-Previa and bring copies of everything.
- 6.Check the status in Tu Seguridad Social. If they request something, upload the additional documents to the same expediente.
- DNI/NIE and, if you act for someone else, a signed authorisation and their DNI/NIE
- Resolución o número de expediente de tu pensión (jubilación, viudedad, incapacidad…) and Nº de Seguridad Social
- Declaration of income and earnings for the last year (borrador o declaración de IRPF, bank certificates of interest, rental income, other pensions)
- Libro de familia or certificaciones literales de nacimiento of the children (for the gender-gap supplement)
- Certificado de empadronamiento colectivo if you live with a partner/family (to prove economic unit and address, only if requested)
- Proof of bank account ownership (IBAN) where you receive the pension
- Up-to-date civil status: certificado de matrimonio or fe de vida y estado, sentencia de divorcio/separación if applicable
Retroactivity is limited
If the supplement applies, they usually pay it retroactively for up to 3 months from the date of application. If you leave it, you lose months of payments.
Income limits
The complemento por mínimos requires you not to exceed income caps that change every year. If you exceed them or declare incorrectly, they can remove the supplement and claim back any overpaid amounts.
Data checks and requerimientos
The INSS crosses data with the AEAT and may ask for papers. If you don't reply within the deadline, they can deny or suspend the supplement.
Pesky cita previa
INSS appointments fly out early. If you're on a deadline, try online with Cl@ve; the site sometimes works better on a computer than on a mobile.

Who can apply for the complemento por mínimos?
Anyone with a contributory pension (INSS) who doesn't reach the annual minimum amount, provided their income (and the income of their economic unit if they live with a partner) is below the current caps. It's reviewed each year.
What is the complemento para la reducción de la brecha de género?
A monthly top-up for people whose careers were affected by child care and who meet the requirements. It can be recognised with the pension or requested later if you didn't ask at the start, providing proof of children and the other conditions.
Can I request both supplements at the same time?
Yes, if you meet the requirements for each. They are compatible because they cover different issues (low income and the effect of caring for children), but each case is reviewed by the INSS.
Can they remove it if my income increases?
Yes. If you exceed the income caps or your family situation changes, they can reduce or remove the supplement and reclaim undue payments. Report changes as soon as they happen.
Do I need an appointment if I do it online?
No. With Cl@ve, certificado or DNIe you submit it in Tu Seguridad Social without an appointment. An appointment is only needed if you go to an INSS office.
How long does it take to be decided?
Normal time: 2–4 weeks. Legally they have up to 90 days. If there are requerimientos or data checks with the AEAT, it can take longer.
