Mandatory course for dog owners (responsible ownership)

What to have ready

1. DNI/NIE to enter your personal data exactly as shown.
2. Email and mobile to register on the campus and receive codes.
3. Empadronamiento if the platform limits access to community residents.
4. Decent browser (prefer Chrome or Firefox; some virtual classrooms fail on older Safari/Edge).
5. Quiet time: allow 2–6 hours depending on modules and your pace.

Documentation

• DNI/NIE scan or a clear photo if the platform asks for it.
• Volante/certificado de empadronamiento (only if access is restricted to residents).
• Verified contact details (email and phone).
• If you already have a dog: microchip number and cartilla may be requested to link the course (not always mandatory).
• Cl@ve or certificado digital (optional) to sign or identify yourself without headaches.

Step by step

1. Find the official link: go to the national bienestar animal page: https://www.mdsocialesa2030.gob.es/derechos-sociales/bienestar-animal/ and locate your comunidad. If your comunidad has launched the course you’ll see the access to the Campus/Aula Virtual.
2. Register on the campus (email + password) or log in with Cl@ve/certificado if available. Confirm the registration from the email and complete your profile.
3. Enrol in the “Curso de tenencia responsable para propietarios de perros”. If they require empadronamiento, upload it as PDF.
4. Do the modules: basic care, socialisation, stress signals, state/regional rules and coexistence. At the end of each module there’s a test. Repeat until you pass if needed.
5. Finish and download your certificado de aprovechamiento from “Mis certificados/Historial”. Make sure the PDF includes a CSV or electronic signature.
6. Store it safely (PDF and CSV receipt). You may need it for adoptions, registro autonómico de animales or licencias municipales (PPP/perro de manejo especial according to your ordenanza).

Tricks that save time

• Use Chrome or Firefox and disable ad-blockers if videos won’t load. That’s the classic pain point.
• If the certificate doesn’t show a CSV/signature, regenerate it from the campus (look for “certificado oficial”).
• Take a screenshot of the final screen with the course/expediente number in case the PDF takes time to appear.
• If the platform asks for empadronamiento, upload a recent PDF (under 3 months) to avoid silly rejections.
• Keep the certificate in two places (cloud and USB). Some offices ask to re-send it months later.

Common mistakes that can derail the procedure

1. Doing the course on a non-official site that charges you. The official course is gratis. Always access via the ministry or your comunidad’s website.
2. Entering data that doesn’t match your DNI/NIE (accents, second surname). Then the certificate won’t cross-check and they can reject it.
3. Using an incompatible browser: videos don’t load, tests don’t register. Switch to Chrome and try incognito mode.
4. Not downloading the official PDF (no CSV). Some ayuntamientos only accept verifiable documents.
5. Leaving it to the last minute before an adoption/licence: if the platform is slow or crashes, you’ll miss the deadline.
