Register a vehicle as Historic with the DGT

What to have ready

1. Cl@ve or a working certificado digital (if not, you can't start).
2. Resolución de catalogación de vehículo histórico from your CCAA and the ficha técnica VH from the special ITV.
3. Tax receipts: Modelo 576 (IEDMT) filed and IVTM from the ayuntamiento paid or proven.
4. DGT fee 1.1/1.2 bought.
5. ID and ownership documents scanned clearly (legible PDFs, no cuts).

Documentation

• Resolución autonómica de catalogación como histórico.
• Tarjeta ITV VH (the ficha técnica with the historic vehicle conditions).
• Modelo 576 de la AEAT filed (exempt or paid) and its receipt.
• IVTM paid/registration in your ayuntamiento (receipt or certificate).
• Tasa DGT 1.1/1.2 (proof of online payment).
• DNI/NIE of the owner and, if you don't sign yourself, authorisation and representation.
• Proof of ownership: contract/invoice or previous permiso de circulación if applicable.
• Insurance in force (don't drive without it, you'll get a hefty fine).

Step by step

1. Catalogue the vehicle: accredited laboratory, your CCAA resolution and the ITV histórica to get the ficha técnica VH.
2. Go to the AEAT (https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es) and file Modelo 576. If you're claiming an exemption, mark it, attach the resolución/ficha and download the receipt.
3. Pay the IVTM at your ayuntamiento's electronic office and keep the payment/registration receipt.
4. Buy the tasa DGT 1.1/1.2 at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/pago-de-tasas/ and keep the proof.
5. File the request through the Registro Electrónico Común (https://rec.redsara.es) addressed to your Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico: write “Matriculación de vehículo histórico”, attach all PDFs and sign with Cl@ve/certificado.
6. Monitor DEHú (https://dehu.redsara.es). If they request anything, answer within the deadline. When they assign the plate and permiso, download the resolution/permiso.
7. Order the placas H at an authorised shop with the permiso de circulación and the ficha VH, fit them and you're done.

Time-savers

• Upload documents as PDF and compress big files. REC often has per-file limits.
• In Modelo 576, if you claim exemption, attach the resolución and ficha VH: avoids silly requests.
• Ask for the IVTM certificate/receipt in advance; some ayuntamientos are slow to issue it.
• Name files clearly: “01_Resolucion_Catalogacion.pdf”, “02_Ficha_VH.pdf”… the DGT clerk will thank you.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Assuming the IEDMT exemption is automatic: without Modelo 576 they won't register you.
• Submitting the normal ITV: you need the historic-specific ITV to get ficha VH.
• Forgetting the IVTM: Tráfico checks it and will halt the file if it's missing.
• Missing subsanación deadlines: REC requests expire in 10 días hábiles and they archive the case.
• Driving without permiso or H plates because you're in a rush: fine and immobilisation. Wait for the notification.
