International Driving Permit (Permiso Internacional de Conducir) (DGT)
It lets you drive outside the EU/EEA with your Spanish driving licence. They give you a physical booklet valid for 1 year, and it only counts if you carry it together with your valid Spanish driving licence.

Step by step
- Pay Tasa 4.5 at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/pago-de-tasas/ with Cl@ve/certificado and save the NRC.
- Fill and sign the official application (impreso de conductores). Tick “Permiso internacional”.
- Book an appointment at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/cita-previa-oficinas-trafico/ (Conductores > Permiso internacional) at your Jefatura.
- Attend the appointment with: DNI/NIE, licence, 32x26 photo, the form and the tasa receipt. If you didn’t pay online, pay by card at the office.
- Collect the permit: they stick the photo in the booklet and give it to you straight away. Check your details before leaving.
Time-saving tricks
- Pay the tasa online and bring the receipt. You move faster at the counter.
- Get the photo right first time. The 32x26 mm size is picky: ask the photobooth/studio for that exact size.
- Hunt early for appointment slots. Many Jefaturas release slots in the morning.
- Bring the physical licence even if it’s in miDGT. They will check and copy it.
Common mistakes that will mess up the process
- Showing up without a photo or with the wrong size: they’ll send you away.
- Spanish licence expired: they won’t issue the international permit. Renew first.
- Not bringing a card: Jefaturas don’t accept cash.
- Assuming the international alone is enough: the international without your Spanish permit is useless and can cause trouble abroad.
- 1.Go to Pago de Tasas de la DGT (https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/pago-de-tasas/), identify with Cl@ve or certificado digital/DNIe and buy Tasa 4.5. Download the payment receipt (NRC).
- 2.Download and fill the “Solicitud de trámites de conductores” marking Permiso internacional. Sign the form. Bring the photo loose for the booklet.
- 3.Book a cita previa at your Jefatura de Tráfico under Conductores > Permiso internacional: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/cita-previa-oficinas-trafico/
- 4.On the appointment day go to the Jefatura with your DNI/NIE/passport, your Spanish driving licence, the 32x26 mm photo and the tasa receipt (if you didn’t pay online, pay there by card; they don’t accept cash).
- 5.At the counter they check details, stick the photo and issue the international permit on the spot. You leave with it.

Validity and use
It lasts 1 year and is only valid if you also carry your Spanish permit in force. If your licence expires or is withdrawn, the international permit stops being valid immediately.
The photo is strict
They require size 32x26 mm, plain background, no sunglasses or hats. If it doesn’t match, they’ll make you get another one and you’ll waste the appointment.
No cash payments
Jefaturas do not accept cash. Bring a card or pay online beforehand and take the receipt (NRC).
Appointments vanish fast
Citas are snapped up quickly in big cities. Slots often appear early morning. If you’re in a rush, check daily or try nearby Jefaturas.

Can I request it online and get it posted home?
Normally it’s an in-person procedure with cita previa and they give it to you on the spot. You can pay the tasa online, but the booklet is issued at the counter.
Is it valid for driving inside the EU?
No. Inside the EU/EEA you drive with your Spanish licence. The international permit is for non-EU/EEA countries that require or recommend it.
How long does it take?
With an appointment and everything correct, you leave the same day in 10–20 minutes. If something’s missing (photo, tasa) they’ll make you come back.
How much does it cost exactly?
It’s Tasa DGT 4.5. The amount changes yearly in the BOE and is around 10–12€. Check the exact figure when paying on the DGT sede.
Can someone else go for me?
Yes, with a signed authorisation, a photocopy of your DNI/NIE and theirs. Electronic power of attorney (apoderamiento electrónico) is even better.
Can I get fined if I drive abroad without this?
In countries that require it you can be fined or your vehicle immobilised. Also some insurers may cause issues if you don’t carry it.
