Registration in the Registro Civil for international adoptions
If you adopted abroad, this makes the adoption valid in Spain and registers it in the Registro Civil. You need this so your child can get a Spanish birth certificate, DNI and passport.

- Book a cita previa at the Registro Civil that applies to you: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/cita-previa
- Submit the solicitud de inscripción with originals and copies. They will give you an expediente number.
- If something’s missing, do the subsanación online via Mi Carpeta Justicia (Cl@ve): https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/area-privada
- They will notify you of the inscripción. Ask for the certificación literal and then you can apply for the child's DNI and passport.
Time-saving tips
- Always bring original + copy of everything. Many Registros scan, but if they don’t you’ll avoid extra trips.
- If unsure about the country and the Convenio, ask your ECAI/Autoridad Central in writing before booking an appointment.
- The Apostilla can take time in the origin country: request it as soon as you have the judgment.
- If your Registro Civil has a long queue, try first thing in the morning and bring a folder ordered with dividers. It helps more than you think.
Common mistakes that will mess up the process
- Submitting documents without Apostilla/legalisation. They will reject it immediately.
- Non-sworn translations or incomplete translations. If one page is missing, they reject it and you lose weeks.
- Not requesting the certificado art. 23 when the country is party to the Convenio. They will ask for it.
- Not clarifying the child's apellidos y nombre according to Spanish rules. Changing it later is a new procedure.
- Assuming everything is online: the verification of originals is still in-person at most Registros.

- 4.Book a cita previa at the Registro Civil that corresponds to your address (or the Registro Civil Central if they tell you to) via the Ministry's appointment system: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/cita-previa
- 5.Go to the appointment and submit the solicitud de inscripción de adopción internacional with all originals and copies. They will give you a expediente number.
- 6.If they request anything else, supply the subsanación online by logging in with Cl@ve at Mi Carpeta Justicia: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/area-privada
- 7.When they register the adoption, ask for the certificación literal de nacimiento española. With that you can apply for the child's DNI and passport.

Country not in the Convenio de La Haya
If the country is not party to the Convenio or the resolution lacks guarantees, they may require exequátur at the Juzgado de Primera Instancia. That extends the process by several months.
Apostilla and traducción jurada are mandatory
Without Apostilla/legalisation and a traducción jurada al español they will reject the registration. No DIY translations.
Registro Civil appointments
In big cities appointments go fast. If you need to travel or school the child, book as soon as your folder is complete.
Child's surnames and name
Spanish rules apply. If you don't state the surname order clearly, they will assign it by default and changing it later is another procedure.

Do I always need exequátur?
No. If the adoption comes with the certificado del art. 23 del Convenio de La Haya and meets the guarantees, that is usually enough to register. Without the Convenio or with defects, you’ll need exequátur in court.
Where do I submit it, my local Registro Civil or the Central one?
Submit it at the Registro Civil of your domicilio. Some complex cases are referred to the Registro Civil Central (Madrid); your Registro Civil decides that. Ask when you book the cita.
Can it be done online?
The actual inscription is usually in person because they must check originals. You can do subsanación and follow-up online in Mi Carpeta Justicia with Cl@ve.
How long does it really take?
If the file is perfect and it's a Convenio de La Haya case, 2-6 semanas is realistic. If exequátur is needed, expect months.
Does my child get Spanish nationality once registered?
If the adoption is plena and at least one adoptive parent is Spanish, the child acquires Spanish nationality of origin when registered. With the literal you can apply for DNI and passport.
Do I have to bring the child to the Registro Civil?
Not generally mandatory, but some Registros request the child for identity checks. Ask when you make the appointment so you don't waste a trip.
