Change of name and/or surnames in the Registro Civil
If you want to change your first name or the order/surnames (habitual use, adaptation to a co-official language, swap surnames, etc.), this goes through the Registro Civil. It lets your birth entry show the name/surnames you actually use or are entitled to.

- 1.Check the legally accepted reasons for a name/surname change on mjusticia.gob.es and decide your ground with evidence (habitual use, surname order, orthographic/linguistic adaptation, translation of the name, etc.): https://www.mjusticia.gob.es/es/ciudadanos/registro-civil
- 2.Book an appointment at your local Registro Civil (the one for your empadronamiento). Many offices manage appointments via the Ministerio de Justicia site or their own web. No appointment = they’ll send you home.
- 3.Prepare a short written request addressed to the Encargado del Registro Civil with your details, exactly what you ask for (e.g., swap surnames; change 'Juan José' to 'Jon'), the legal reason and a list of attached documents.
- 4.Go to the appointment with originals and copies. File your request at the desk. If the office uses DICIREG, they give you a receipt with CSV on the spot; if not, they stamp a copy.
- 5.Wait for the resolution. If favourable, they record the change in your birth entry. Ask for an updated certificación literal for your paperwork.
- 6.With the updated certificación, renew documents: DNI/pasaporte (cita: https://www.citapreviadnie.es), driving licence (https://sede.dgt.gob.es), Social Security (https://importass.seg-social.es), AEAT (https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es) and the rest (banks, uni, employer).
