Fe de Vida y Estado at the Registro Civil: you get it on the spot
It's the Registro Civil certificate that proves you're alive and shows your marital status (soltero, casado, viudo or divorciado). They'll ask for it for pensions, banks, extranjería or weddings abroad.

- 1.Go to https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es and look for the Registro Civil section to book your cita previa at your office (they may ask for Cl@ve to manage the booking).
- 2.Gather what you need: DNI/NIE, empadronamiento if applicable and, if you want your divorced/widowed status shown, make sure that inscription exists; if it doesn’t, register it first.
- 3.Go to the Registro Civil on the appointment day with the originals. They will make you appear in person (basically, see your face) and sign the request.
- 4.If you can’t go that day for health reasons: get a medical certificate dated the same day and present it at the counter; or get an acta notarial de fe de vida y estado and take it to the Registro Civil so they can issue the certificate.
- 5.Ask to be given the certificate on the spot on official paper. If you need it for abroad, ask whether it needs legalisation/Apostilla and where to get that done.
- 6.If you live abroad: request the fe de vida y estado at the Spanish Consulate for your area (with cita previa) or provide the consular document if the requester accepts it.
