Fe de Vida y Estado at the Registro Civil: you get it on the spot

What you need on hand

1. Your DNI/NIE o pasaporte in force. Original, no phone photos.
2. Cita previa at your Registro Civil. Without it, many offices won't deal with you.
3. If you want divorciado/viudo to appear, make sure that inscription is done. If not, you'll appear as married.
4. If you can't go yourself: certificado médico del día or acta notarial.

Documentation

• DNI/NIE o pasaporte original.
• Empadronamiento reciente if your real address doesn't match the DNI or you go to a different office.
• Certificado literal de matrimonio and, if applicable, sentencia firme de divorcio/decreto (and that the annotation exists in the Registro Civil).
• Certificado médico (signed and stamped, preferably less than 24–48 h old) if you can't appear.
• Poder notarial o autorización if someone else goes for you, with copies of DNIs.
• Justificante de cita.

Step by step

1. Book an appointment at https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es for the Registro Civil of your address. Many offices manage their agenda there; if not, use the office's own site. They may ask for Cl@ve to book.
2. Check your marital status. If you divorced or were widowed, make sure it's registered where it should be. Without that annotation, your fe de vida y estado will be wrong.
3. Go on the appointment day with the originals. They'll identify you and you'll make a short face-to-face appearance (yes: they need to see you). Sign the request.
4. If you can't go, provide a same-day medical certificate or an acta notarial. Some offices only accept a medical certificate dated within 24 h; call the registro if in doubt.
5. Collect the certificate. Normal case: they print it on the spot. Check the marital status is correct.
6. Going to use it abroad? Ask if it needs legalisation or Apostilla de La Haya and where to get that done.

Tricks that save time

• Don't get it too early: many banks/consulates only accept documents under 90 days old.
• If the appointment is impossible, try first thing in the morning; some agendas open slots at 08:00 or on set days. Switching browser sometimes fixes it (yes, some sedes behave better on Chrome).
• Bring the empadronamiento if your DNI is out of date. Avoid the pointless trip.
• If your divorce doesn't show in the system, ask your court for the testimonio con firmeza and register the inscription ASAP.

Common mistakes that can ruin the process

1. Going without an appointment and getting turned away.
2. Thinking it works online: for fe de vida they need to see you or you need a doctor/notary.
3. Marital status not registered: they'll issue it wrong and it won't be valid.
4. Old medical certificate: if more than 24–48 h pass, many offices reject it.
5. Forgetting the Apostilla if it's for abroad: you'll have to legalise it later in a rush.
