Register your civil marriage in the Registro Civil
This is the official registration of your civil marriage in the Registro Civil so it has legal effect in Spain. You’ll use it to request the certificado de matrimonio, update details on DNI/Seguridad Social and have the marriage recorded for all legal purposes.

- 1.Go to the Ministerio de Justicia website and find the Registro Civil for the place where you got married; that’s the default office for the entry.
- 2.If you married in a juzgado/ayuntamiento/notaría: check they have sent the acta electronically. If they already sent it, wait for the inscription (usually 1–3 weeks).
- 3.If they DID NOT send the acta, or you married abroad / in a religious rite with civil effects: gather the documents above and submit the application to the competent Registro Civil (place of celebration or your domicilio; if abroad, it goes to the Registro Civil Central).
- 4.Submit the documents in person or via registro electrónico with certificado/Cl@ve if your Registro Civil is in DICIREG. If your office doesn’t accept online, do it in person (some require cita previa even if it’s not obvious on their site).
- 5.When they confirm the entry is made, request your certificado literal de matrimonio online with Cl@ve/certificado digital or pick it up at the Registro Civil.
- 6.Check all details (names, dates, régimen económico if you provided it) and keep at least one literal copy for later procedures (DNI, Seguridad Social, Hacienda).
