Paternity recognition at the Registro Civil

- 1.Check the competent Registro Civil: normally the Registro Civil of the place where the child was born. If you go to a different Registro, they will remit the recognition to the birth Registro.
- 2.Book an appointment (cita previa) at your Registro Civil via justicia.gob.es (section Registro Civil) or via the office's own website. If it does not appear online, call the Registro directly.
- 3.Go to the appointment with your ID and, if the child is a minor, with the mother; if the child is 12 or older, bring them too so they can give consent. There you will sign the acta de reconocimiento before the Encargado.
- 4.If you recognised before a notary or at a Consulado, file the testimonio or authorised copy at the Registro Civil of the birth so they can enter it in the record.
- 5.The Registro annotates the filiation in the birth entry and, when processed, will issue or update the Libro de Familia and literal birth certificates.
- 6.Request (or download, if your Registro allows) an updated certificado literal de nacimiento with the filiation already registered for other procedures (surnames, passport, etc.).
