Guía completa
What you need to have to hand
- 15 días have passed since the death. If not, don't bother yet.
- Literal death certificate from the Registro Civil (the extract is not valid; it must be literal).
- Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe if you do it online.
- Card or online banking to pay the tasa Modelo 790-006.
Documentation
- Literal death certificate (with DNI/NIE of the deceased if recorded). If the death was outside Spain: inscription in the Registro Civil Consular/Registro Civil Central or foreign certificate apostilled.
- DNI/NIE/passport of the applicant.
- Proof of payment of the tasa 790-006.
- Authorization and DNI of the represented person if you act for someone else.
Step by step
- Request the death certificate at the Ministerio de Justicia site: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/certificado-defuncion (they give it online or send it to you).
- Pay the fee 790-006 at https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/pago-tasas (choose the trámite for Seguros de cobertura de fallecimiento; save the receipt or the NRC if requested).
- Apply for the certificate online at https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/certificado-contratos-seguros-cobertura-fallecimiento with Cl@ve/certificado. Fill in the deceased's data and attach the death certificate and the fee.
- If you prefer in person, book cita previa at https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/cita-previa (Gerencia Territorial of your province). Take the original death certificate, DNI and the paid tasa 790-006.
- Download the certificate (PDF with CSV) from your expediente on the sede. If you went in person, they give it printed or provide the CSV.
- With the certificate, contact the insurers listed to process the payout (they will ask for their forms and additional documents).
Time-saving tips
- Do it online: if 15 días have passed, it usually appears immediately. In person means appointments and queues.
- Scan the death certificate as a clear PDF. If the file is huge, reduce the size; the sede rejects oversized uploads.
- If you're also asking for Últimas Voluntades, create two payments 790-006. It's the same fee, but different certificates.
- If the death is foreign, sort the inscription in the RC Central or get the Apostilla de La Haya first. That avoids rejections for invalid documents.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying before day 15: you'll get an empty result and think there are no insurances when there might be.
- Uploading an extract death certificate instead of the literal: they'll reject it.
- Paying only one 790-006 for two certificates (Seguros + Últimas Voluntades): they'll ask for another payment; you lose time.
- Misunderstanding what the certificate shows: it does not show beneficiaries or amounts. Only the insurers and linked policies.
- Forgetting the 5 años limit: after that time contracts may not appear and the certificate can come up blank.
- 1.Check that 15 días have passed since the death (if not, the sede won't issue anything).
- 2.Request the literal death certificate at the Ministerio de Justicia site: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/certificado-defuncion
- 3.Pay the fee Modelo 790-006 (telepayment by card/NRC or bank) at: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/pago-tasas
- 4.Process the “Certificado de contratos de seguros de cobertura de fallecimiento” online with Cl@ve/certificado at: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/certificado-contratos-seguros-cobertura-fallecimiento and attach the death certificate and the 790-006
- 5.If you prefer in person, book an appointment at the Gerencia Territorial de Justicia: https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/cita-previa and bring the original death certificate, DNI and paid fee
- 6.Download the PDF with CSV from your expediente on the sede or collect the certificate on the day of the appointment
- Literal death certificate from the Registro Civil (with at least 15 días since the date of death)
- DNI/NIE/passport of the applicant (and of the deceased if recorded on the death certificate)
- Proof of payment of the fee Modelo 790 Código 006
- Authorization and DNI of the represented person if you act on behalf of someone else
- If the death occurred abroad: inscription in the Registro Civil Consular/Registro Civil Central or foreign certificate apostilled
Legal deadlines
You can only request it from day 15 after the date of death and up to 5 años later. Before day 15 the system will deny it; after 5 años it won't appear in the register.
The 006 fee is per certificate
Últimas voluntades and insurance certificates use the same Modelo 790-006, but they're different certificates. If you ask for both, you pay two 006 (one per certificate).
What the certificate shows (and what it doesn't)
The certificate lists the insurers and policies that cover death. It does NOT show amounts or beneficiaries; you must handle that directly with the insurance company.
