- Bank account: IBAN in the applicant’s name (avoid third-party accounts).
- Disability (for disability pension): resolution/degree and recent reports.
- Authorisations signed by household members to allow data checks.
Step by step
- Check eligibility (age, residence, income limits and household unit). If you’re unsure about the caps, check the info on the Seguridad Social site.
- Padrón: request the colectivo e histórico at your ayuntamiento. If someone is missing or dates are wrong, they’ll block it.
- Gather income proof: IRPF or certificado de no obligación, pension/subsidy certificates, payslips, rents, etc.
- Appointment: book at the INSS (CAISS) via the sede: Cita Previa > Pensiones. If online, use https://rec.redsara.es/registro and submit a written application with all documentation in PDF.
- Submit the application and ask for the stamped receipt. If using the electronic register, address the written application to the órgano gestor de PNC of your CCAA or to the INSS.
- Corrections: if they ask for more, upload it within the deadline. Watch your Carpeta Ciudadana for notifications.
- Decision and payment: if granted, you’ll be notified and paid in 14 pagas. Effects usually start from the month after you applied.
Time-saving tips
- Bring/upload the padrón colectivo e histórico from the start.
- Upload everything as clear PDFs and grouped (ID, padrón, income, disability) to avoid repeated subsanaciones.
- If you live with family, include signed authorisations and their DNIs: fewer requests for extra papers.
- Book your appointment mid-week early morning: Mondays get full fast.
- Keep the resguardo de registro and a checklist of what you submitted.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Incomplete padrón (someone missing or not historical): guaranteed hold-up.
- Not declaring small incomes (rents, small help): if found later, expect reintegro demands.
- Third-party bank account: causes problems for payment setup.
- Not reporting changes within 30 days to income/household: suspension and repayment.
- Out-of-date disability degree (disability): they can deny it if you don’t meet the 65% threshold.
- 1.Book an appointment at the INSS (CAISS) to submit the application and documents: go to https://sede.seg-social.gob.es and choose Cita Previa > Pensiones y otras prestaciones.
- 2.Get the certificado de empadronamiento colectivo e histórico from your town hall (if someone or dates are missing, they’ll stop your case).
- 3.Gather income evidence: certificates from INSS/SEPE, vida laboral if relevant, payslips, IRPF or certificado de no obligación from the AEAT, plus any household income (rent, etc.).
- 4.If you do it online, log in with Cl@ve or a certificate and use the Registro Electrónico General: https://rec.redsara.es/registro. Send a written application addressed to the órgano gestor de PNC of your CCAA or to the INSS and attach all PDFs.
- 5.Attend your INSS appointment with originals and copies; hand in the application and ask for a stamped receipt (resguardo).
- 6.Watch for requerimientos in your Carpeta Ciudadana (https://carpetaciudadana.gob.es) or by post; if they ask for missing documents, upload them within the deadline.
- DNI/NIE in force for the applicant and for all adult household members
- Certificado de empadronamiento colectivo e histórico (showing registrations and deregistrations for all household members)
- Libro de familia or birth/marital status certificates
- Proof of income: last IRPF return or certificado de no obligación, payslips, certificates from INSS/SEPE/CCAA, rent receipts, etc.
- Bank account number (IBAN) in the applicant’s name
- For disability: certificado de discapacidad (≥65%) and any recent medical reports/DICTAMEN you have
- Signed authorisations from household members to allow data checks (social services in the CCAA commonly require these)
- For foreign nationals: proof of legal residence in Spain (TIE, relevant resolutions) and the required residence periods
Communicate changes within 30 days
If your income, address or household composition changes and you don’t notify within 30 calendar days, they can suspend the pension and demand repayment of any overpaid amounts.
Residence and padrón
Without the certificado de empadronamiento colectivo e histórico and without proving the legal residence years required, they will deny it. Don’t leave this until the last minute.
Compatibility with other benefits
It’s not compatible with a contributory pension. With the IMV they either offset amounts or it becomes incompatible depending on the case: if you get IMV and are granted a PNC, they will adjust amounts or make you choose.
Annual review
Your income and household are reviewed every year. If you don’t respond to the review, they suspend the pension until you sort it out.

What age do I need to apply?
PNC for retirement: 65 or older. PNC for disability: between 18 and 65 with at least 65% disability and low income. Both require specific residence years in Spain.
Do my parents’/partner’s income count if I live with them?
Yes. The household unit is counted and the income limits depend on who lives with you. That’s why they ask for the certificado de empadronamiento colectivo e histórico.
Can I work and still receive it?
It depends on the type and the amount. If you exceed income limits, they’ll suspend or adjust payments. Disability pensions have specific compatibility rules, but always within income caps. Notify changes within 30 days.
Is it compatible with the Ingreso Mínimo Vital?
Usually not. If you’re entitled to both, they normally offset amounts or ask you to choose. Always notify to avoid improper payments and repayment demands.
How long does it take to resolve?
Typically 1–2 months, sometimes longer if papers are missing or there’s backlog. If granted, effects are normally from the first day of the month following the application.
I’m a foreign national, can I apply?
Yes, if you have legal residence and meet the residence years: for retirement they usually require 10 years (2 in the last 15) and for disability 5 years (2 recent), plus the other requirements.
Can they ask me to repay money if I exceed income limits?
Yes. If you exceed the limits and didn’t notify, you’ll face repayment of benefits and possibly sanctions. Better to communicate changes and avoid nasty surprises.
