Guía completa
What you need to have to hand
- Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe to do the procedure online without hassle.
- DARDE (registration as a jobseeker) active. Without this, SEPE won’t look at you.
- IBAN of an account in your name.
- Certificado de empresa (if the company hasn’t sent it via Certific@2) and a document proving the end of your contract if applicable.
Documentation
- DNI/NIE and, if you are a foreigner, TIE and work permit.
- Certificado(s) de empresa for the last 6 months. They normally arrive electronically; if not, attach a PDF.
- DARDE active from the regional employment service.
- Libro de familia and ID numbers of spouse/children if you want them counted as cargas.
- U1 if you worked in the UE/EEE; if outside, bring whatever accreditation you have.
- IBAN and account ownership proof (best to attach a bank certificate or screenshot if asked).
Step by step
- Register for unemployment at your regional service (SOC, LABORA, SAE, etc.). Do it online with Cl@ve/certificado and download the DARDE. Do it the same day or the day after the end of your contract.
- Go to https://sede.sepe.gob.es with Cl@ve/certificado and navigate to Personas > Prestaciones > Solicitar prestación contributiva.
- Fill the form: personal data, date and reason for cese, family cargas and IBAN. Be careful with dates and company names.
- The sede will tell you if a certificado de empresa is on file. If not, attach yours and the dismissal/end-of-contract letter.
- Attach everything else: libro de familia, U1, court orders about custody, etc. Sign and send.
- Save the receipt and check your file on the sede. The resolution usually arrives in 1–4 weeks; the payment is on day 10 of the following month.
- Renew (sellar) the demand when required and notify any new job, medical leave or travel abroad.
Time-saving tips
- If your company doesn’t send Certific@2, your file will stay in limbo. Call them and ask them to send it; meanwhile upload your copy.
- Upload everything as PDF and make it readable. If there’s doubt about the account, attach a bank certificate of ownership.
- If you worked in the EU, request the U1 asap. You can submit without it, but SEPE will request it and it slows your payment.
- Don’t wait until the last moment: the 15 working days fly by; if you miss them, they deduct days of entitlement.
Typical mistakes that can derail your application
- Not registering as a jobseeker before applying: they’ll reject or pause your benefit.
- Voluntary resignation and still trying to claim: it won’t work and wastes time.
- Not renewing the DARDE: suspension and possible sanction. Set a reminder.
- IBAN in someone else’s name: rejection or delay; the account must be yours.
- Wrong dates (cese/demand): it messes up the calculation and they may ask for corrections.
- Working and not reporting it: you’ll have to return payments and face sanctions. Always report it on the sede.
- 1.Register as a jobseeker with your regional employment service and download the DARDE (usually online with Cl@ve/certificado on your community portal).
- 2.Go to the Sede Electrónica del SEPE (https://sede.sepe.gob.es) with Cl@ve or certificado digital and follow: Personas > Prestaciones > Solicitar prestación contributiva.
- 3.Fill in the application: personal details, recent contributions/company, family cargas and enter your IBAN (it must be in the name of the applicant).
- 4.Check if the certificado de empresa is already on SEPE’s system; if not, attach the certificado and the dismissal/end-of-contract letter in PDF.
- 5.Attach any other documents needed (libro de familia, U1, court rulings, etc.) and sign the application electronically.
- 6.Download the registration receipt and monitor your file on the sede and the notifications inbox for the resolution and amount.
- 7.Renew (seal) your demand when required and notify the SEPE of any new job, medical leave or trips abroad.
- DNI or NIE valid; if you are a foreigner, tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE) and work permit
- Inscripción como demandante de empleo (DARDE) active from your regional employment service
- Certificado(s) de empresa for the last 6 months (if the company hasn’t sent it via Certific@2)
- Bank account number (IBAN) in your name for the payment
- Libro de familia and NIF/NIE of spouse and children if you claim family cargas
- Document proving the legal situation of unemployment if it’s not already on record (dismissal letter, end-of-contract, conciliatory act, finished ERE/ERTE)
- Formulario U1 if you worked in the UE/EEE or equivalent proof if you worked outside Spain
15 working-day deadline
You have 15 working days from becoming unemployed (and registering as a jobseeker) to apply. If you miss it, they won’t fine you, but you lose entitlement days: they count from the date you should have applied.
You must be registered as a jobseeker
Without a valid DARDE, SEPE won’t recognise the benefit. Watch out for quarterly renewals: if you don’t sellar, they suspend payments and can sanction you.
Voluntary resignation = no right
If you left voluntarily, you don’t have a right to the prestación contributiva. Only possible if you work afterwards and are later dismissed for a non-voluntary reason.
Certificado de empresa via Certific@2
The company must send it electronically. If it doesn’t arrive, your file will be incomplete and delayed. Ask them to send it and meanwhile attach your own copy.
Working while claiming without telling them
If you work (even a few hours) and don’t report it, you’ll have to pay back what you received and may get a sanction. Always report it in the sede.

How much will I get and for how long?
You get 70% of your regulatory base for the first 180 days and 60% afterwards, with caps depending on family cargas. Duration depends on contributions in the last 6 years: with 360 days cotizados you have 120 days of paro; with 6 years or more, up to 720 days.
Can I claim paro if I left voluntarily?
No. Voluntary resignation does not give entitlement to prestación contributiva. You need a non-voluntary end (dismissal, end of contract) or to work again and have the next end be non-voluntary.
What if I miss the deadline?
You can apply later, but they deduct days from the day after you should have applied. No fine, but you lose money and payment is delayed.
When is the benefit paid?
Payments are normally made on day 10 of each month. The first payment can take 3–6 weeks depending on when your application enters the system and whether the certificado de empresa is missing.
Can I combine paro with part-time work?
Yes, you can either compatibilise or suspend. If you compatibilise, they pay the proportional part; if you suspend, you keep the remainder for later. Notify SEPE before you start.
What if my company doesn’t send the certificado de empresa?
Keep insisting they send it via Certific@2 and upload your copy. Without that certificado, SEPE can’t calculate your entitlement properly and the resolution stalls.
