Register and declare exotic animals and CITES species (possession, import and Art. 10)
If you have or plan to bring a reptile, exotic bird, primate or another regulated species, this is where you apply for CITES permits and register possession so you don’t end up with a fine. Applies to legal possession, import/export and the intra‑EU certificate (Art. 10) if you want to sell or transfer.

- 1.Check if your species is in CITES/EU Annexes and if it’s listed as invasive: https://www.miteco.gob.es/es/biodiversidad/temas/conservacion-de-especies/comercio-internacional/ and https://www.miteco.gob.es/es/biodiversidad/temas/conservacion-de-especies/especies-exoticas-invasoras/
- 2.Mark the specimen (microchip/ring) and get the vet to issue the marking certificate with number, date and your ID. Without marking, CITES will toss your application.
- 3.Log in with certificado/Cl@ve at the sede del MITECO (CITES procedure) and apply for the needed permit: import/export/re‑export or the Art. 10 certificate for possession/sale. Attach origin, marking and photos.
- 4.If you import: once the import permit is approved, coordinate entry through a Punto de Inspección Fronterizo with SOIVRE and Animal Health, and present the DUA to Customs (AEAT): https://www.agenciatributaria.gob.es/AEAT.sede/aduanas/aduanas.shtml
- 5.Attend the inspection when called (SOIVRE/BCP). Bring originals of the CITES documents and the animal so they can check the marking. Pay any fees (charges/customs) and they’ll release the specimen.
- 6.You receive the CITES permit/certificate (they may send it on security paper). Keep the original like gold: they can ask for it at checks, sales and movements.
