Change of address at the DGT (driving licence and vehicles)
Use this to tell the DGT your new address for your driving licence and for your vehicles. That way fines, notices and the IVTM go to where you live now and not to the flat you left.

Step by step
- Go to the site: vehicles at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/tu-vehiculo/cambio-de-domicilio/ and licence at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/tu-permiso-de-conducir/cambio-de-domicilio/.
- Identify with Cl@ve, certificado or DNIe. Accept the padrón query (it saves uploading papers).
- Choose what to change: driving licence, vehicles, or both. Tick the number plates you want to move for circulation address.
- Check/enter the new address. If it's not recognised, attach the volante de empadronamiento PDF.
- Sign electronically and register. Download the PDF receipt.
- Open miDGT and check the correct address appears. Keep the receipt in case the ayuntamiento asks about IVTM.
Time-saving tips
- Have the CP and municipio exact. One wrong CP will kill the registration.
- If you just registered on the padrón, wait 24–48 h for INE updates. If not, upload the volante and you're done.
- If you have several cars, do the change in one session and tick all number plates.
- Activate DEV if you don't want to rely on physical post for fines and notices.
Typical mistakes that can derail the procedure
- Trying before you're empadronado: the DGT won't find the address and you'll get stuck.
- Putting a "creative" address (urbanisation without number, wrong CP): the validator rejects it.
- Thinking this also changes AEAT/Social Security: it doesn't, those are separate.
- Not checking the IVTM the first year after moving: you might get the bill from the old municipio and then have to claim.
- Using an old browser: use updated Chrome/Edge/Firefox for the signing and avoid Java/firm signature errors.

- 2.Identify with Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe and accept the query of your padrón data (if you don't, have the volante de empadronamiento PDF ready).
- 3.Choose what you want to change: driving licence address, circulation address for your vehicles, or both. Tick the vehicles you want to move if not all of them.
- 4.Enter/check the new address. If the system doesn't recognise it, attach the volante de empadronamiento and check CP and municipio match.
- 5.Sign the application electronically and register the procedure. Download the receipt in PDF and save it.
- 6.Open the miDGT app (Android/iOS) and check your address shows correctly. If you use DEV (Dirección Electrónica Vial), make sure it's active and up to date.
- 7.In the coming weeks, when IVTM is due, confirm with your ayuntamiento that the vehicle is already registered in the new municipio so you don't end up paying in the old one.

Obligation to keep your address up to date
Not telling the DGT about a change of address can be a minor offence. Also, fines may be sent to your old address and can be considered notified by edict.
Padrón: the typical snag
If the padrón isn't updated, the DGT site will give an error. Update your empadronamiento first or attach a recent volante. Without that the procedure won't go through.
IVTM and the ayuntamiento
Changing the vehicle's circulation address at the DGT moves the tax to the new municipio, but there can be delays. Keep an eye on the first receipt so it doesn't arrive charged to the old ayuntamiento.
Don't confuse this with AEAT/Social Security
This only changes the address at the DGT. AEAT, Seguridad Social, SEPE, etc. are separate and you must update them separately.

Can I be fined if I don't tell the DGT about my change of address?
Yes, it's punishable as a minor offence. You also risk fines being sent to the old house and being considered notified by edict without you knowing.
How long does it take to take effect?
Online it's immediate and you'll see it in miDGT straight away. Propagation to all systems (padrón, ayuntamiento for IVTM, etc.) can take 1–3 days.
Does it cost money?
No. Reporting a change of address to the DGT is free, both for the driving licence and for vehicles.
Do I have to go to a Jefatura or make an appointment?
Not if you do it online with Cl@ve, certificado or DNIe. You'd only need an appointment to do it in person if you don't have digital means.
Does this also change my fiscal address or the padrón?
No. This doesn't affect AEAT or the padrón. First register on the padrón where you live and then notify each organisation separately.
I've moved to another provincia, do I need new plates or anything else?
No. Just update the address in the DGT and, if you want, check your insurance policy and ITV use the new address. Number plates don't change.
Does the change apply to all my vehicles automatically?
You can apply it to all or choose specific number plates. If you don't tick a vehicle, it will keep the old address for IVTM and notifications.

¿Es obligatorio y gratis comunicar el cambio de domicilio a la DGT?
Sí, es obligatorio comunicar el cambio de domicilio y es gratuito. El conductor y el titular del vehículo deben mantener actualizada su dirección para que las notificaciones (especialmente de sanciones) lleguen bien. No hacerlo puede provocar que te des por notificado de multas que nunca llegaste a leer.
¿Tengo que cambiar la dirección del carné y del coche por separado?
En el mismo trámite de la DGT puedes actualizar el domicilio asociado al conductor (permiso de conducir) y al vehículo. No se reimprime el carné ni el permiso de circulación: la dirección se actualiza en el registro. Recuerda que el DNI y el padrón municipal se cambian por sus propias vías.
¿Me multan por no comunicar el cambio de domicilio a la DGT?
La consecuencia principal no es tanto una multa directa como quedar notificado de sanciones enviadas a tu dirección antigua sin haberte enterado, lo que te puede hacer perder plazos de alegación y descuentos. Por eso conviene actualizar el domicilio en cuanto te mudas, junto con el padrón municipal.
