Exchange of foreign driving licence (DGT)

Voluntary period: 20 calendar days. After that, +50% surcharge applies.

To swap your foreign driving licence for a Spanish one if you live in Spain and your country is exchangeable (UE/EEE, Reino Unido, Suiza or countries with an agreement). Useful so you don’t get stuck after the 6 months (non-UE) or if your licence expires.

Guía completa

What you need to have to hand
  1. Cl@ve or certificado digital to start the online application.
  2. Original driving licence and its details (number, categories and dates).
  3. NIE + TIE/Certificado UE and passport.
  4. Psicotécnico recent from an authorised centre.
  5. Traducción jurada and Apostilla/legalización if your licence isn’t in castellano.
  6. Card or bank account to pay the DGT fee.
Documentation
  • Original driving licence valid (front and back).
  • Identity and residence: NIE and TIE/Certificado UE + passport.
  • Empadronamiento (they may request it for posting the licence).
  • Psychophysical report (the centre sends it to DGT, but keep the report number).
  • Traducción jurada and, if needed, Apostilla.
  • Certificate of validity/authenticity from the issuing country if your case requires it.
Step by step
  1. Go to the sede de la DGT and confirm your country is canjeable: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/permisos-de-conducir/canje-permisos/
  2. Identify with Cl@ve and open the solicitud de canje. Fill in details and upload the documents.
  3. Get the psicotécnico (if you don’t have it) and add the report number.
  4. When the expediente asks, pay the tasa on the sede and keep the NRC.
  5. Wait for the notice: they may call you to Jefatura to hand in the original, sign and have a photo taken. Don’t book a generic appointment.
  6. They’ll issue a temporary authorisation if applicable. The Spanish licence will arrive by post or appear in miDGT.
Tricks that save you time
  • Order the traducción jurada and the Apostilla early; that’s the thing that delays most files.
  • Upload files as PDF/JPEG with good quality and reasonable size (under 5 MB per file).
  • Check your padrón address is up to date: they’ll send the licence there.
  • If payment errors, check bank movements before repeating: the NRC can take a few minutes to appear.
Common mistakes that can mess up the process
  • Presenting a expired licence (third countries): it gets rejected.
  • Not providing traducción/Apostilla when required: the expediente loops.
  • Letting the 6 months pass if you’re not from UE/EEE/UK/CH: you lose legal driving rights.
  • Trying to book a generic Jefatura appointment: canjes are summoned from the expediente; if you go without a summons they’ll send you home.
  • Not asking for the temporary authorisation when you hand in the original: you might be left unable to drive until the new licence arrives.
  1. 1.Go to https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/permisos-de-conducir/canje-permisos/ and check that your country is exchangeable and whether they ask for extra documents.
  2. 2.Identify yourself with Cl@ve or certificado and fill the canje application: your data, licence number, categories and address. Upload scans of the licence (front/back) and the required documents.
  3. 3.Get the psicotécnico at an authorised centre and note the report number; if you already have it, attach/declare it in the application.
  4. 4.Pay the DGT fee online on the sede (card or direct debit) when the file enables payment and keep the NRC.
  5. 5.Wait for DGT to contact you (email/SMS) with instructions: they may require you to go to Jefatura to hand in the original, sign, have photo taken and capture fingerprint/signature. Don’t book a generic appointment: they’ll summon you from the expediente.
  6. 6.Hand in the original licence on the day you’re called. Ask for a temporary driving authorisation if you need to drive; it’s valid only in Spain while they issue the Spanish licence.
  7. 7.Receive the Spanish licence by post at your address or see it in miDGT once issued. If they require tests (theory/practical) they will inform you and set a date.
  • NIE and residency document: TIE or Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE (verde), plus passport.
  • Original driving licence from your country, valid, scanned both sides.
  • Psychophysical fitness report (psicotécnico) from an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores (valid ~90 days).
  • Sworn translation (traducción jurada) of the licence if it’s not in castellano (and, if applicable, legalisation/Apostilla).
  • Certificate/confirmation of validity and authenticity of the licence issued by your country (if DGT requests it for your case).
  • Recent certificado de empadronamiento (they sometimes ask this to check the postal address).
  • Proof of payment of the DGT fee (NRC if you pay online) when the file requests it.
