Forklift operator card (carné de carretillero, certificado PRL). Not from the DGT
This is not a DGT driving licence. It's a health & safety training certificate (certificado PRL) to operate forklifts. You need it if you'll be driving forklifts in warehouses, factories or construction sites and your employer requires it by law.

What to have ready
- DNI/NIE en vigor.
- Availability for the course (theory + practice). It’s usually one day or a weekend.
- A serious training centre (must include real practice with the type of forklift you’ll use).
- Destination employer (if you already work, they should manage the autorización interna and the medical check).
Documentation
- Certificado de formación PRL de carretillas (issued by Servicio de Prevención or training centre, with theory and practice and date).
- Reconocimiento médico apto for forklift operation (vigilancia de la salud by your company or SPA).
- Autorización interna de la empresa to drive forklifts on their premises (signed document, with equipment/areas).
- DNI/NIE.
- If you go onto public roads: permiso B, and that the forklift meets DGT/ITV/insurance/signage as applicable.
Step by step
- Talk to your employer and get them to enrol you on the course via their Servicio de Prevención (own or outsourced). If you go private, pick a centre that guarantees practical sessions.
- Book a date and complete the theory (usually short; sometimes online, but watch out for centres that skip practice).
- Attend the practical session on the forklift (counterbalance, reach truck, pallet truck… whatever you’ll use). They’ll assess manoeuvres, safety and signalling.
- Collect your aptitude certificate. Check it lists types of forklift, date and the signature of the centre/SPA.
- Request the autorización interna from your employer in writing (include machines and areas where you can operate). Keep it with the certificate.
- Using public roads? Check DGT rules on special vehicles: https://www.dgt.es/muevete-con-seguridad/vehiculos/vehiculos-especiales/ and confirm permiso B, insurance and signage.
Time‑saving tips
- Ask that the certificate lists the exact forklift types you will use. You’ll avoid repeating the course if equipment changes.
- If possible, do the course on the site where you’ll work. You’ll learn real routes and real hazards.
- Keep the certificate and the autorización interna as PDF and paper. Audits and new employers will ask for them.
- Ask your employer about their renewal policy (3–5 years is common). Get it in an email so it’s clear.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Believing there is a DGT carretillero licence: there isn’t one. If someone sells it that way, be wary.
- Taking a only-online course: without practice it won’t protect you and the employer shouldn’t authorise you.
- Not asking for the autorización interna: you might have the certificate but can’t legally operate at that company.
- Using a forklift on public roads without permiso B/insurance/signage: expect fines and immobilisation.
- Not including the type of forklift on the certificate: later they may say it “doesn’t apply” to your machine and make you repeat the course.
- 1.Talk to your employer: they should include you on a forklift course through their Servicio de Prevención (in-house or outsourced). If you go private, pick a training centre that does real practical sessions (avoid 100% online courses).
- 2.Book your spot and date. They’ll give you the syllabus and schedule. There’s usually a theory part (sometimes online) and a hands-on practice with the machine.
- 3.Complete the full training and pass the practical assessment. If you pass, the centre issues the certificado de carretillero (theory + practice, with date and types of forklift).
- 4.Ask your employer for the autorización interna in writing to operate forklifts on their premises, specifying models/areas where you can work.
- 5.Are you going to use the forklift on public roads (cross a street, use a quay, etc.)? Check DGT rules on special vehicles: https://www.dgt.es/muevete-con-seguridad/vehiculos/vehiculos-especiales/ and make sure you have permiso B, insurance, signage and whatever else applies.
There is no DGT “carné de carretillero”
The DGT does not issue or renew this. It’s PRL training under RD 1215/1997 and the autorización interna is given by your employer. If someone sells it as “homologado por DGT”, be suspicious.
No practice, no good
A 2‑hour PDF or a fully online course won’t cut it. You must have practical training on the actual machine you’ll use. If there’s an accident, both you and your company can be in serious trouble.
Public roads: fines and immobilisation risk
If you use a public road without permiso B, insurance or the vehicle meeting special-vehicle rules, you can be fined and the forklift can be immobilised.
Expiry and renewals
The law doesn’t set an expiry, but many employers ask for renewal every 3–5 years or when you change forklift type. Ask them to put their requirements in writing.
Does the DGT issue the forklift card?
No. It’s a PRL training certificate plus an internal company authorisation. The DGT only gets involved if you use the forklift on public roads.
Does the certificate expire?
There’s no legal expiry date, but many employers require refreshers every 3–5 years or when you change equipment. Get the company’s rule in writing.
Can I be fined if I operate a forklift without the course?
At work, Inspección de Trabajo can sanction the employer and you can be removed from the post. On public roads, authorities can fine you and immobilise the machine.
Is a 100% online course without practice valid?
No. It must include real practice with the forklift and an assessment. Without that, it won’t protect you in an accident and your employer shouldn’t authorise you.
Does my certificate follow me if I change jobs?
Yes, the training is yours, but the new employer must issue their own autorización interna and may ask for refresher training or extra modules depending on their equipment.
Do I need a permiso B to drive a forklift?
Inside private facilities, no. To use public roads (even to cross a street) you’ll generally need permiso B and the forklift must meet DGT/insurance/signage requirements.
