Notify the DGT you sold your car

What to have to hand

1. Cl@ve PIN/Permanente o certificado digital/DNIe working.
2. Contrato de compraventa with delivery date, full buyer details and signatures.
3. Car details: matrícula and número de bastidor (VIN) (on the ficha técnica/permiso).
4. Buyer details: name, DNI/NIE and address. If it’s a company, CIF and business name.
5. Authorisation if someone else will do it for you (with their DNI/NIE).

Documentation

• Contrato de compraventa scanned, clearly legible (PDF recommended). Put the real delivery date.
• Permiso de circulación and ficha técnica (to check VIN and data; not always required to upload, but keep them handy).
• Buyer ID (DNI/NIE number or CIF if it’s a company).
• Authorisation for representation if you’re not doing it yourself.

Step by step

1. Go to the Sede de la DGT: Vehicles > Transferencia de vehículos > Notificación de venta. Log in with Cl@ve or certificado. General link: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/transferencia-de-vehiculos/
2. Identify the vehicle with matrícula or VIN and confirm you are the selling owner.
3. Fill in the buyer details and the transmission date (the one on the contract). Don’t invent dates: that’s what cuts your responsibilities.
4. Attach the contract (clean PDF, no blurry photos). If someone represents you, attach their signed authorisation.
5. Send the notification. There’s no online fee for private sellers. Wait for confirmation.
6. Download the justificante of Notificación de venta. Save it to your cloud and send it to the buyer. If a fine comes after that date, this is your proof.
7. (Optional but useful): send a copy to the ayuntamiento where you paid the IVTM so they update their records. Some ayuntamientos are slow and may still issue a charge if they don’t see the sale.

Time-savers and tricks

• Do it the same day as delivery or the next day. The sooner, the better.
• If the DGT site errors, try Chrome/Edge and Cl@ve Permanente. Sessions time out fast; have PDFs ready.
• Put the time of delivery in the contract as well as the date if you want to be exact. Useful for same-day fines.
• If you sell to a compraventa, get an invoice and their CIF for the notification. That avoids later disputes.

Common mistakes to avoid

1. Not attaching the contract or attaching an unreadable one: without proof the notification may fail.
2. Wrong date: if you put a later date you’ll eat fines in between. If you put an earlier false date you’ll have trouble if there’s a dispute.
3. Incomplete buyer data (wrong DNI/NIE or missing address): the system can reject it or leave an incomplete record.
4. Thinking this transfers the car: it doesn’t. The transferencia is done by the buyer within 30 days. You only protect yourself.
5. Forgetting the IVTM: even after notification, the ayuntamiento can take time. If you get a bill for the next year, present the notification and contract.
6. Unresolved charges (reserva de dominio, embargos): the notification doesn’t remove them. Sort these before sale or expect calls and problems.
