Placas provisionales (verdes y rojas) de la DGT
You request a temporary circulation authorisation to put green plates (private) or red plates (companies) on a vehicle so you can drive it while you sort the definitive registration, import paperwork or do tests. Useful if you just bought a car, are waiting for papers or you’re a dealer/manufacturer.

What you need to have ready
- Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe that works (and Autofirma if you sign online).
- DGT fee bought (modelo 791) and NRC kept.
- Vehicle documents (ownership and technical) and active insurance.
- If imported, customs papers and translations.
- If you’re a company, powers of attorney and business accreditation.
Documentation
- Identity: DNI/NIE or passport. Companies: NIF and representative with powers.
- Ownership: invoice, contract or document proving the car is yours.
- Technical: tarjeta ITV in force (used) or manufacturer documentation/COC (new).
- Insurance: policy or proof. They’ll check it electronically, but bring it.
- DGT fee (modelo 791): receipt and NRC of the payment.
- Imported: DUA/aduanas + foreign documents (translation if applicable).
Step by step
- Choose the type: green (private while you register/import) or red (company for tests/transfers). No cause, no plate.
- Appointment or online: if you go in person, book a Jefatura slot. If online, go to the sede DGT > Vehículos > Matriculación > Autorización temporal de circulación.
- Pay the fee: buy the fee (modelo 791) and keep the NRC. Without it you won’t get past the form.
- Fill in and attach: complete the application, attach ownership, technical, insurance and (if applicable) customs. Sign with Cl@ve/certificado.
- Decision: if everything checks out, download the temporary authorisation PDF (or they’ll print it at the counter on appointment day).
- Physical plates: with the authorisation, go to a plate maker and order the plates (green/red). They’ll make them when you bring the authorisation and your ID.
- Drive: fit the plates, keep the authorisation and the insurance in the car. Watch the expiry date.
Time-saving tips
- Scan to PDF and black & white legible. No crooked phone photos.
- ITV first if it’s a used import: without ITV they’ll stop the temporary.
- Insurance active from day one; otherwise they can immobilise you even with plates.
- Gestoría if you’re a company applying for red plates: they sort it faster and with fewer hassles.
- Browser: if signing fails, try Autofirma updated and a desktop browser.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Requesting it without a reason: "because it’s convenient" won’t fly. Say registration in progress, import or tests.
- Expired ITV on used cars: instant denial.
- No insurance: plates but no insurance = fine and immobilisation.
- Lost NRC: without the fee’s code your application is dead in the water.
- Letting it expire: driving with an expired temporary is a sure recipe for fines and immobilisation.
- 1.Decide the type: green (private while you register/import) or red (company for tests/transfers). They don’t give it without a justified reason.
- 2.If you go in person, book an appointment at the Jefatura Provincial: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/oficina-virtual/cita-previa-jefaturas/
- 3.Buy the DGT fee (modelo 791) and keep the NRC. You need it to register the application.
- 4.Go to https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/ > Matriculación > Autorización temporal de circulación and submit the application with Cl@ve/certificado, attaching the documentation.
- 5.Download the temporary authorisation (PDF) when it’s granted, or pick it up at the counter on the day of your appointment.
- 6.Order the physical plates (green or red) from an authorised maker, taking the temporary authorisation and your ID.
- 7.Fit the plates and always keep the temporary authorisation and the insurance in the car. If it expires, don’t drive.
- DNI/NIE or passport of the holder (and CIF/NIF and power of attorney if it’s a company)
- Proof of ownership: invoice, sales contract or allocation document
- Tarjeta ITV/ficha técnica in force (if used) or manufacturer technical documentation/COC (if new)
- Compulsory insurance in force (receipt or policy details; they will check it)
- Proof of payment of the DGT fee (modelo 791) for the temporary authorisation
- If the vehicle is imported: DUA/aduanas and foreign documents translated if applicable
- If you request red plates (company): proof of business activity (IAE/CNAE) and business registration
- Appointment receipt (resguardo de cita previa) if you’re going to Jefatura in person
Circular sin autorización o con placas caducadas
They can immobilise the car and fine you. If the temporary authorisation expires, the vehicle cannot circulate until you renew it or get the definitive registration.
ITV y seguro no son opcionales
If the car is used, they will ask for ITV in force. And without insurance, even with plates you can’t drive. Don’t risk it.
No es un atajo para esquivar impuestos
The DGT only grants temporary plates if there’s a reason (registration in progress, import, company tests). If you can’t justify it, they’ll deny it.
¿Cuánto duran las placas verdes para particulares?

Usually they don’t ask for IVTM for the temporary authorisation; it’s settled when you go for the definitive registration. If they ask, your case is probably special.
¿Cuánto tardan en darme las placas físicas?
It depends on the maker. With the authorisation in hand, many do them the same day or within 24–48 h. The DGT doesn’t produce the plates, it only authorises them.
