DGT REU: check and correct data in the Registro de Vehículos

What to have ready

1. Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe to access the DGT sede.
2. Permiso de circulación for the vehicle.
3. Tarjeta ITV or eITV with the correct data (if you're correcting technical details).
4. Proof of address (volante de empadronamiento or a recent bill) if you're changing the vehicle's address.
5. Escrito de solicitud de rectificación: explain which data is wrong and what the correct data is, with matrícula, bastidor and your contact details.
6. Authorisation if someone else does it for you, plus copies of DNIs.

Documentation

• Identification: DNI/NIE or certificado/Cl@ve.
• Permiso de circulación.
• Tarjeta ITV or eITV (for technical data or date of first registration).
• Proof of address if you change the vehicle's address.
• Signed escrito detailing the rectification requested and the documents that prove it.
• Authorisation + DNIs if a third party acts for you.

Step by step

1. Check what's in the REU: go to the DGT sede > Vehicles > "Consulta tus vehículos" and log in with Cl@ve/certificado. Verify holder, address, VIN, make and dates.
2. Change of address (if applicable): do it online with Cl@ve from the Vehicles section. It's free and usually immediate.
3. Rectify wrong data: if you spot errors (VIN, make, date), go to "Escritos y comunicaciones" (sede.dgt.gob.es > Otros trámites) and submit a telematic escrito attaching permiso de circulación, tarjeta ITV/eITV and your proof. 4. In person with appointment: if you prefer the counter, book a cita from the sede and bring originals + copies. Watch out: appointments disappear quickly.
5. Check the change: once you have a registration number, in 5-15 business days go back to "Consulta tus vehículos" or check the miDGT app. If needed, request an informe de vehículo to verify (informe reducido free; the detailed one has tasa 4.1). Time-saving tips

• Take screenshots of how the REU currently shows the vehicle before you change anything; attach them if there's an error.
• Name files clearly (MATRICULA_permiso.pdf, MATRICULA_ITV.pdf). Fewer problems when uploading.
• Online rectification beats the counter: same effect and no appointment.
• If the error comes from the ITV/eITV, ask them for a corrected document and upload it: DGT usually accepts that quickly.
• Use the informe reducido (free) to check the field is fixed without paying for the detailed report.

Common mistakes that will mess you up

• Mixing up change of ownership with rectification: if the holder isn't you, you need a transfer with fees and taxes, not a correction letter.
• Not updating the address: then fines don't reach you and you face surcharges. Do it as soon as you move.
• Uploading blurry photos: if VIN or dates aren't legible they'll stop the process. Scan or take a sharp photo.
• Going to Jefatura without a cita: they'll send you back. Book from the sede before you go.
• Paying fees when you shouldn't: fixing a REU error is usually free. Don't mark fees that don't apply.
