Activate the DNIe: PIN and certificates to use it online
You're going to enable the DNI chip: generate or reset the PIN and reissue certificates so you can log in and sign on sites with DNIe/Cl@ve. Useful if you don't remember the PIN, get errors, or the certificates have expired.

What you need to have at hand
- DNI en vigor. If it's expired, forget activating the chip until you renew the DNI.
- Your fingerprint. The DNIe kiosk will ask for it to authenticate you.
- Card reader (if you plan to use the DNIe at home) compatible with DNI 3.0/4.0.
- Drivers for the DNIe (official Police software) and AutoFirma installed.
- Compatible browser: Firefox or Edge usually work; Chrome/Safari cause trouble with the DNIe module.

- PIN receipt (the kiosk prints it; keep it or take a photo and delete it afterwards for security).

Step by step
- Check if it's needed: go to https://valide.redsara.es/valide/ and verify your device detects the DNIe. If no certificate appears or it asks for a PIN you don't know, yes — you need to activate it.
- Go to the DNI office: any oficina de expedición has a Punto de Actualización. Some have access control; if they stop you, book at https://www.citapreviadnie.es/ and come back on the assigned day.
- Activate/renew at the kiosk: insert the DNI, place your finger when asked and choose “Activar/renovar certificados” and “Cambio de PIN”. The kiosk issues new certificates and lets you set a PIN. It takes 2–3 minutes.
- If it shows ‘certificate expired/revoked’: use the renovation option at the same kiosk. If the physical DNI is expired or you changed data, you'll have to renew the DNI (a different procedure with a fee and appointment).
- Install software at home: download DNIe drivers from https://www.dnielectronico.es/PortalDNIe/ and AutoFirma from https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html. In Firefox, add the PKCS#11 module for the DNIe (certificates menu, security devices).
- Test before using it for real: validate the certificate at https://valide.redsara.es/valide/ and do a test signature. If you want to use Cl@ve, go to https://www.clave.gob.es/ and try a login.
Time-saving tips
- Hit the kiosk first before you go to an office that needs a signature. Avoid the last-minute drama if the PIN is expired.
- Pick a memorable PIN but not obvious. If you forget it, no drama: go back to the kiosk and change it.
- Use Firefox ESR on Windows and keep AutoFirma updated: fewer 'no certificates' errors.
- If the police station won't let you in without an appointment, go early or try another nearby office; some let you access the kiosk without a booking.
Common mistakes that can ruin the process
- Three wrong PINs: you block the chip. Only fixed at the kiosk with your fingerprint.
- Thinking it activates online: no, PIN and certificate issuance are always done at the kiosk.
- DNI valid ≠ certificates valid: certificates expire earlier; if they fail, renew at the kiosk.
- Wrong browser: Chrome/Safari + AutoFirma = errors on many sites. Use Firefox/Edge.
- Outdated DNIe drivers: install the latest from dnielectronico.es before blaming the office.
- 1.Comprueba si tu DNIe funciona: entra en https://valide.redsara.es/valide/ y prueba la detección del certificado. Si no aparece o te pide un PIN que no recuerdas, toca activarlo.
- 2.Localiza una oficina de expedición con Punto de Actualización del DNIe (las comisarías donde hacen DNI). Algunas exigen cita para entrar: si ves control, pídela en https://www.citapreviadnie.es/ (elige DNI) y ve el día que te den.
- 3.En la comisaría, busca el quiosco del DNIe. Mete tu DNI, apoya el dedo cuando lo pida y elige “Activar/renovar certificados” y “Cambio de PIN”. Pon un PIN nuevo y guarda el resguardo que imprime.
- 4.Si el quiosco te dice que los certificados están caducados o revocados, renúevalos ahí mismo (opción “Renovar certificados”). Si el DNI está caducado, tendrás que renovar el DNI antes.
- 5.En casa, instala el software del DNIe desde https://www.dnielectronico.es/PortalDNIe/ y AutoFirma desde https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html. Configura el módulo del DNIe en tu navegador (PKCS#11 en Firefox).
- 6.Prueba el acceso/firmado: valida el certificado en https://valide.redsara.es/valide/ y, si quieres usar Cl@ve con DNIe, entra en https://www.clave.gob.es/ y haz un acceso de prueba.
- DNI físico en vigor (si está caducado, no te deja activar el chip)
- Tu huella dactilar (te la piden en el quiosco del DNIe)
- Ordenador con lector de tarjetas compatible con DNI 3.0/4.0 (si vas a usar el DNIe en casa)
- Drivers del DNIe instalados (descarga oficial en dnielectronico.es)
- AutoFirma instalado para firmar en sedes (descarga oficial en firmaelectronica.gob.es)
- Navegador compatible (Firefox/Edge recomendado; Chrome/Safari suelen dar guerra)
Three wrong tries and block
If you enter the PIN wrong three times, the chip gets blocked. It can only be unblocked at the Punto de Actualización del DNIe with your fingerprint.
Certificate expiry
The DNIe certificates expire before the physical DNI (usually after 5 years). If you changed personal details (name/surnames) or there's a revocation, they may force you to renew the DNI, not just the certificate.
Access to the kiosk and appointment
The kiosk is self-service, but some police stations won't let you in without an appointment. If they stop you at the door, book at citapreviadnie.es and come back; yes, it's annoying.
Picky browsers
Many official sites fail with Chrome/Safari. Use Firefox or Edge with the DNIe module and AutoFirma up to date, or you'll get 'no certificates' errors.
Do I need an appointment to activate the DNIe PIN?
In theory no. It's a self-service kiosk at the DNI office. In practice, some police stations won't let you in without an appointment. If they give you trouble, book at citapreviadnie.es and that's it.
Can I activate the DNIe from home online?
No. Activating/resetting the PIN and issuing certificates is done at the kiosk with your fingerprint. At home you only install drivers and check it works.
How long does it take and how much does it cost?
It takes 5–10 minutes at the kiosk. It's free. If the DNI is expired and you need to renew it, that has a renewal fee and is a different procedure.
I entered the PIN wrong three times and now it won't accept it, what do I do?
It's blocked. Go to the Punto de Actualización del DNIe with your DNI and your finger, and they'll unblock/renew the PIN in a moment.
My DNIe certificates are expired but the DNI itself isn't, can I renew them without changing the DNI?
Yes, if the DNI is valid and your data hasn't changed, you renew them at the kiosk. If you changed personal details or there's a special revocation, you'll need to renew the DNI.
Why won't the official site recognise my DNIe even though I just activated it?
Usually it's bad drivers/module install or an incompatible browser. Install the DNIe software, use Firefox/Edge, load the PKCS#11 module and test at valide.redsara.es before trying the 'real' site.

Sí, DNIe Activación suele aceptar el DNIe como medio de identificación electrónica siempre que dispongas de lector y los certificados del chip estén activos.
¿Cuánto dura el certificado emitido tras DNIe Activación?
Los certificados digitales obtenidos en procedimientos relacionados con DNIe Activación suelen tener una vigencia de entre 2 y 4 años, según el emisor (FNMT, ACCV, etc.).
