Step by step
- Download the EX-01 and fill it in: https://extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es/ficheros/Modelos_solicitudes/mod_solicitudes2/EX-01_Autorizacion_residencia_temporal_no_lucrativa.pdf.
- Consular appointment (your country): go to https://www.exteriores.gob.es, find your Consulate and book for “Visado de residencia no lucrativa”. Submit everything apostilled and with sworn translations. They will tell you how to pay the consular fee and, if applicable, the 790-052.
- Collect the visa once granted and enter Spain within its validity (normally 3 months).
- Book the TIE appointment as soon as you arrive: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/ (province > POLICÍA – TOMA DE HUELLAS).
- Pay the 790-012 at https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790_012/ (online with Cl@ve or print and pay at the bank).
- Fingerprints at the police station: bring passport, visa, 790-012 receipt, photos and proof of address (volante de empadronamiento or contract). They give you a receipt and you later collect the TIE.
Time-saving tips
- The insurance: ask the insurer for a policy and a coverage certificate stating no copayments/no waiting periods in writing. Avoid silly denials.
- Sworn translations: get them early; penales and medical certificates expire quickly (check validity with your consulate).
- Fingerprint appointments: try odd hours (early morning). Chrome usually works better than other browsers.
- Pay fees online if you can; if not, take the PDF to the bank and get it stamped on the spot.
Common mistakes that can derail your application
- Trying to apply in Spain: they will refuse it. It’s a consular process.
- Insurance with copayments or a travel policy: direct denial.
- Missing deadlines: 1 month to collect visa, 3 months to enter, 30 days to request TIE.
- Mixing up fees: 790-052 (residence) vs 790-012 (TIE). They’re different.
- Financial means that are “in the air”: statements without enough balance or inaccessible funds. Better a stable balance in your name.

- 2.Book an appointment at the Spanish Consulate in your country for the “Visado de residencia no lucrativa” via https://www.exteriores.gob.es and submit EX-01 + all documentation with apostilles and sworn translations into Spanish
- 3.Wait for the decision, collect the visa at the Consulate and enter Spain within the visa validity period (usually 3 months)
- 4.As soon as you arrive, book the TIE appointment (fingerprints) at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/ selecting your province and “POLICÍA – TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA)”
- 5.Generate and pay the 790-012 fee (TIE) at https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790_012/; if you can’t pay online, print the PDF and pay at a bank
- 6.Attend the police station on the appointment day with passport, visa in the passport, proof of payment of the 790-012, 1–2 photos, and proof of address (volante de empadronamiento or contract); they will take your fingerprints
- 7.Collect the TIE at the same police station when they notify you (usually takes 30–45 days)
- Formulario EX-01 cumplimentado y firmado (2 copias)
- Pasaporte válido (mínimo 1 año de vigencia) + fotocopias de todas las páginas
- Seguro médico privado en España sin copagos ni carencias, cobertura total por 1 año
- Medios económicos: extractos bancarios recientes y certificados de saldo (400% del IPREM para ti + 100% por cada familiar)
- Certificado de antecedentes penales de los últimos 5 años, apostillado y con traducción jurada al español
- Certificado médico que indique que no padeces enfermedades con repercusiones de salud pública, apostillado y traducido
- 2 fotos tamaño carné recientes (fondo claro); te pedirán más para la TIE
- Justificante de pago de tasas: 790-052 (residencia) y 790-012 (TIE, ya en España)
Where to apply
La no lucrativa se pide en el Consulado de España de tu país de residencia. Si la intentas presentar en España, te la inadmiten.
Critical deadlines
Suele haber 1 mes para recoger el visado tras concesión, 3 meses para entrar a España y 30 días desde la entrada para pedir la TIE. Si te pasas, problemas.
Health insurance
Tiene que ser español o usable en España, sin copagos ni carencias, y por 12 meses. Un seguro de viaje barato te lo tumba.
Different fees
Se pagan dos tasas diferentes: 790-052 (residencia) y 790-012 (TIE). No las mezcles. Algunas oficinas solo aceptan pago en banco con el PDF.
Appointments sell out
La cita de huellas se agota en minutos en algunas provincias. Entra a horas raras y usa Chrome; en móvil a veces ni carga.
Can I work with the non-lucrative residence?
No. Neither salaried nor self-employed work. After 1 year you can apply to change to residence-and-work if you meet the requirements.
How much money do I need to show?
What the 400% of the current IPREM requires for you plus +100% per family member. Usually proven with bank statements and balance certificates; better to show a stable, available balance in your name.
Can it be requested from Spain?
Generally, no. You apply at the Spanish Consulate in the country where you legally reside. If you’re in Spain as a tourist, they won’t accept it here.
What health insurance is acceptable?
Private, full coverage in Spain, no copayments or waiting periods, and for 12 months. If it has copayments or waiting periods, expect denial.
How long does the visa take?
Between 4 and 12 weeks depending on the consulate and workload. The TIE, once in Spain, takes 30–45 days to be ready.
What happens if I don’t apply for the TIE within 30 days?
You can end up in a limbo and have issues with other procedures. Apply asap; if you miss it you’ll have to justify the delay and it can get messy.
Can I enter and leave Spain with the visa before I have the TIE?
Yes during the visa validity, but it’s better to get the TIE as soon as possible. For travelling in Schengen, the TIE avoids border headaches.
