Guía completa
What you need to have to hand
- UK passport with enough validity.
- Cl@ve or certificado digital to submit online.
- Empadronamiento recent (and padrón histórico if you have it).
- Proof you lived in Spain before 31/12/2020: contracts, bills, medical records, school enrolment, etc.
- Proof of means and health insurance according to your situation.
- Photo 32x26 mm and tasa 790-012 for the TIE.
Documentation
- UK passport (original and copy).
- Certificado de empadronamiento (less than 3 months).
- Proofs of residence prior to 31/12/2020.
- Proof of means: employment/contracts and payslips, extractos, S1, private insurance.
- Health insurance (SIP or a private policy without copayments).
- Family members: UK certificates with apostillado and traducción jurada.
- Photo 32x26 mm on white background.
- Tasa 790-012 paid and resolución EX-20 or certificado verde.
Step by step
- Check you qualify: you must have been resident in Spain before 31/12/2020. If not, this isn't your route.
- File the EX-20 online at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es with Cl@ve/certificado, attaching everything above. This is for temporary or permanent residence under Brexit.
- Wait and download the resolución. It usually takes 1–4 weeks depending on province.
- Book the fingerprints (TIE) appointment at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpco/index.html. Choose your province and the trámite “Policía – Toma de huellas (expedición de TIE)”.
- Pay tasa 790-012: download it at https://sede.policia.gob.es, print and pay at a bank. Keep the receipt.
- Attend the comisaría with passport, empadronamiento, resolución EX-20 or certificado verde, a 32x26 mm photo and the tasa receipt. Fingerprints, signature and a resguardo.
- Collect the TIE when they notify you or at the deadline they give (usually 20–30 days). Some provinces also require an appointment to pick it up.
Tips that save time
- Appointments: log in early (08:59) and use Chrome. The portal can be flaky.
- Temporary vs permanent: if you already had 5 years before 31/12/2020, apply for permanent (10 years) and avoid renewals.
- Padrón histórico: attach it if you have it. It convinces officials.
- Health insurance: if you don't contribute and don't have S1, get a policy without copagos and full coverage. They check this.
- UK documents: request apostilla and a traducción jurada in good time. This often blocks files.
Common mistakes that will ruin the process
- Arriving after 2020 and expecting the Brexit route. They'll deny you.
- Bad photo: wrong size or background; they'll send you back.
- Tasa 790-012 not paid or with wrong details. No justificante, no fingerprints.
- Insufficient proof of residence: only a contract without bills, or an old padrón. Provide several types of evidence.
- UK certificates without apostilla/traducción: unlegalised documents = indefinite hold.
- Not booking the appointment early: Policía agendas fill up and you can be delayed by weeks.
- 1.Check you qualify under the Acuerdo de Retirada: you must have been resident in Spain before 31/12/2020. If you arrived after that, this route doesn't apply.
- 2.Submit the EX-20 online at the Sede de Extranjería (Residencia UK por Brexit) using Cl@ve or certificado digital at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. Attach proofs of residence, means and insurance.
- 3.Wait for the Oficina de Extranjería resolution and download it from the same sede when it's favourable.
- 4.Book an appointment for “Policía – Toma de huellas (expedición de TIE)” in your province at https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpco/index.html.
- 5.Download/print the tasa 790-012 from the Sede de la Policía Nacional (https://sede.policia.gob.es), pay it at a bank and keep the receipt.
- 6.Go to the appointment at the comisaría with your passport, empadronamiento, resolución EX-20 or certificado verde, a 32x26 mm photo and the tasa 790-012 receipt. They'll take your fingerprints and give you a resguardo.
- 7.Collect the TIE when they notify you or by appointment (depends on province) through the same cita previa portal.
- UK passport valid (original and copy)
- Certificado de empadronamiento recent (less than 3 months)
- Proof you lived in Spain before 31/12/2020 (rental contract, padrón histórico, bills, school certificates, etc.)
- Proof of means according to your case: employment contract and payslips, vida laboral, bank statements; or S1 if pensioner; or private health insurance
- Health insurance (SIP active or full private policy without copayments)
- For family members: marriage/registered partnership or birth certificates, apostillado and translated into Spanish if applicable
- Passport photo 32x26 mm on white background (for the TIE)
- Proof of payment of tasa 790-012 and favourable resolución EX-20 or certificado verde de residente UE
Only for people already resident before 31/12/2020
If you moved to Spain after that date, you are not covered by Brexit. You must follow the general regime (visa, non-lucrative, work permit, etc.).
Fingerprint appointments are limited
Policía appointments get snapped up. Try first thing in the morning and check different days. The portal sometimes works better in Chrome and without a VPN.
UK documents need legalisation
UK certificates must be apostillado and, if not in Spanish, have a sworn translation. Missing either will stall your expediente.
Temporary vs permanent
If you already had 5 years' residence before 31/12/2020 you should get permanent (TIE de larga duración — 10 years). If not, you'll get temporary (5 years).

I arrived in Spain in 2021, can I use the Brexit procedure?
No. The Acuerdo de Retirada covers people resident in Spain before 31/12/2020. If you arrived later you need a permit under the general regime (visa, work, studies, etc.).
I have the certificado verde, do I have to change to a TIE?
Not compulsory, but recommended. The green certificate proves residence, but a TIE makes travel and dealing with banks/administrations much easier.
How long does it take and can I travel meanwhile?
The EX-20 resolution usually takes 1–4 weeks depending on province. The TIE is usually ready 20–30 days after fingerprints. With the resguardo and your passport you can move within Spain; for leaving and re-entering the EU it's safer to wait for the TIE or carry the certificado verde.
Will I get fined if I don't get the TIE?
Not exactly a fine, but you'll face practical problems renewing empadronamiento, signing contracts or travelling. If you're covered by Brexit, do the switch to TIE.
Can I include my partner or children?
Yes. Family members dependent on you are covered if they lived with you before 31/12/2020 and you can prove it. Watch out for apostilla and sworn translations on UK certificates.
What if they deny my EX-20?
They can give you 10 days to submit alegaciones. If you can't prove prior residence, you'll have to go through the general regime. Don't present half-baked evidence — that's a common reason for denial.
Do I need empadronamiento for this?
Yes. They ask for it almost always. Get a recent certificado and, if possible, a padrón histórico to show you were here before 31/12/2020.
