What you need to have at hand
- Cl@ve PIN/Permanente, digital certificate or DNIe with its PIN. 2) Your DNI/NIE/TIE. 3) Exact date when you start work or leave the country. 4) A PDF or photo of the contract/alta en Seguridad Social or the tickets. 5) Benefit file number and IBAN in case they ask.
Documentation
- DNI/NIE/TIE in force.
- Proof of placement: contract or alta en Seguridad Social (if unsure, download your vida laboral at https://importass.seg-social.es).
- Tickets/reservations if the cessation is due to leaving Spain (with departure and return dates).
- Signed renunciation letter if you want to terminate voluntarily.
- If you move to a pension or incapacity: INSS resolution (only if it applies).
Step by step
- Go to https://sede.sepe.gob.es and log in with Cl@ve, certificate or DNIe.
- Go to your benefits area and find the option to communicate baja/suspensión. Choose the real cause: placement, leaving the country or renunciation.
- Enter the effective date. Don’t invent anything: put the exact day you start work or leave.
- Attach the supporting document (alta en SS/contract or tickets). Check it reads clearly.
- Send and save the registration receipt (PDF or asiento number). If the site crashes, refresh and try again from Historial.
- No digital means: from the same sede, book an office appointment and bring everything on paper. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
- Check the status a few days later on the sede (Consulta de prestaciones) and that the cessation date is correct.
Tricks that save time
- If your contract is temporary (<360 days), prefer suspension over definitive cessation. Then reactivate when it ends.
- SEPE’s website can be flaky. Try Chrome/Firefox, clear cookies and avoid peak hours.
- If you can’t upload something, later use the function to presentar escritos/aportar documentación on the sede quoting your file number.
- Get your vida laboral in 1 minute at https://importass.seg-social.es to prove the alta if the company is slow.
Common mistakes that can derail the process
- Trusting that “the company will notify it”. You get an overpayment, then a claim and possible sanction.
- Requesting definitive cessation for a short contract. Bye bye entitlement days. Use suspension.
- Putting the wrong date. The crosscheck with Seguridad Social flags it and creates an overpayment.
- Not saving the receipt. If there’s a problem, without proof you waste time and nerves in appeals.
- Leaving the appointment to the last minute. Appointments fly on Mondays; try first thing or at night, or do it online and forget about it.
- 1.Go to https://sede.sepe.gob.es and log in with Cl@ve, digital certificate or DNIe.
- 2.In “Mis prestaciones”, pick the option to communicate baja/suspensión and choose the cause (full-time job, moving abroad, renunciation, etc.).
- 3.Enter the exact effective date and upload the supporting document (alta en la Seguridad Social/contract or travel tickets if leaving the country).
- 4.Confirm and download the registration receipt. If it fails, take a screenshot and keep the asiento number.
- 5.If you don’t have Cl@ve/certificate, book an appointment at your SEPE office from https://sede.sepe.gob.es (Cita previa) and bring the documents in paper.
- 6.After 2–5 working days, go back to https://sede.sepe.gob.es (Consulta de prestaciones) and check the cessation is recorded with the correct date.
- 7.If you receive a payment after the cessation, wait for the overpayment notice or submit a written request via sede to return it as soon as possible.
- DNI/NIE and, if you are foreign, TIE in force
- Cl@ve PIN or permanent, digital certificate or DNIe with PIN (to do it online)
- Your benefit file number (número de expediente) and the IBAN where they pay you (in case the form asks for it)
- Proof of placement: contract or registration with Seguridad Social (you can get your vida laboral at https://importass.seg-social.es)
- Tickets or booking with dates if the cessation is due to leaving Spain
- Signed letter of renunciation if you want to terminate the benefit voluntarily
- INSS resolution if you move to a pension or incapacity (only if it applies)
Duty to notify
If you start work or leave the country, tell SEPE immediately (don’t leave it until next week). If you overpaid, you’ll have to give it back and you might be sanctioned.
Don’t burn your entitlement for a short contract
If your contract is under 360 days, don’t request a definitive cessation: suspend instead. Then you resume and don’t lose days.
The company won’t save you
Even if the company registers your alta at Seguridad Social, you still must notify SEPE. Don’t trust it — data crosschecks arrive late.
Tricky appointment schedules
Appointments fly on Mondays. Try first thing or late at night. If you can, do it online with Cl@ve and skip the trip.
Do I have to notify if I start work today?
Yes. File the cessation the same day or ASAP. If a payment arrives later, they will ask you to return it and you may be sanctioned.
I have a 2‑month contract, cessation or suspension?
Suspension. Mark temporary placement and don’t extinguish. When it ends, request reactivation and you keep the remaining days.
How do I notify if I move abroad?
From the same option on the sede. Less than 15 days usually doesn’t affect; 15–90 days implies suspension with authorisation; longer can mean cessation unless you have prior authorisation to look for work. Attach tickets.
Can I cancel a renunciation?
If you renounced definitively, no. If it was actually a suspension for a contract under 360 days and you stop, you reactivate and that’s it.
Do I need an appointment if I use Cl@ve?
No. Online it registers immediately and you download the receipt. Appointment is only if you lack digital means.
What date do I put as the effective date of cessation?
The real date you start working or leave. Don’t make it up: SEPE crosschecks with Seguridad Social and they’ll catch you.
