Guía completa
What you need to have to hand
- Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe to sign the alta online. If you don’t have one, get Cl@ve: it’s quick and saves you queues.
- DNI/NIE in force. Non‑EU: permiso de residencia y trabajo.
- Número de la Seguridad Social (if you already have one) and current address.
- Proof of end of contract/ERTE/record if you’ve just left work (this shapes your profile and is key if you’ll claim unemployment).
- Titles and courses for your profile. Not for show: it helps you get decent offers.
Documentation
- DNI or NIE (mandatory). Passport alone does not work for the alta without NIE.
- Permiso de trabajo in force if applicable.
- Número de la Seguridad Social and address (empadronamiento if required).
- Carta de despido / end of contract or voluntary resignation (clarifies your situation).
- Títulos, certificados, professional licences (CAP, TPC, etc.).
- CV in PDF or ready to paste.
Step by step
- Activate Cl@ve if you don’t have it: https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/clave.html. Without this, online you’re stuck.
- Go to the servicio público de empleo of your comunidad and look for “Alta como demandante” or “Inscripción”. Many CCAA let you do it 100% online. If not, book a cita.
- Fill the form: personal details, availability (hours, shift, mobility), occupations, experience and training. Attach the requested documents.
- Sign the alta with Cl@ve/DNIe. If you attend in person, take the originals and they’ll process it at the counter.
- Download the DARDE (the famous unemployment card). It shows the exact renewal date. Set an alarm.
- Going to claim prestación/subsidio? Do it at https://sede.sepe.gob.es within the 15 días hábiles from the end of the contract. You must be registered.
Time‑saving tips
- If your comunidad allows it, do everything online. In‑person appointments can be 2–3 weeks out.
- Keep the DARDE on your phone and in the cloud. Losing it causes a scramble to renew.
- Choose your occupations and availability carefully: it affects the offers you get (and if they call you up for courses).
- Set a renewal alarm: calendar, app, anything. Missing it can cost you a month of prestación.
- If you move region, arrange the traslado de la demanda before you move or right after you arrive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up SEPE with the servicio autonómico: the alta as demandante is NOT done at SEPE. SEPE is for payments.
- Missing the 15 días hábiles deadline to claim prestación: those days won’t be paid later.
- Not checking the DARDE date: each comunidad follows its own schedule. There’s no mercy for lateness.
- Going without NIE/permiso if you’re foreign: they’ll send you away.
- Not updating your address: you’ll be summoned miles away and, if you don’t go, you can be deregistered.
- 1.Log into Cl@ve and make sure you can sign online (if you don’t have it, register at https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/clave.html).
- 2.Go to the servicio público de empleo of your comunidad and book a cita or start the alta online as a demandante (from https://www.gob.es locate the link to your servicio autonómico).
- 3.Fill the registration form: personal details, address, availability, occupations and training. Attach the specific documents they request (end of contract, permits, titles).
- 4.Sign the alta with Cl@ve/DNIe. If you go in person, attend the office on your cita day with your DNI/NIE and originals of the documents.
- 5.Download your DARDE (Documento de Alta y Renovación de la Demanda) and note the exact renewal date. Save the PDF safely.
- 6.If you will claim prestación or subsidio, do it at https://sede.sepe.gob.es within the 15 días hábiles from when your contract ended.
- DNI or NIE in force (passport alone is not accepted for the registration, unless you have an associated NIE)
- Número de la Seguridad Social (if already assigned)
- Permiso de residencia y de trabajo vigente (if you are non‑EU)
- Current address and postal code (empadronamiento if your comunidad asks for it)
- Proof of recent employment situation: end of contract, carta de despido or voluntary resignation (to define your profile and, if relevant, benefits)
- Qualifications and certificados de profesionalidad (for your profile and job matches)
- Updated CV (many CCAA require it to complete your profile)
Deadline to apply for unemployment
You have 15 días hábiles from the end of the contract to register and request the prestación at the SEPE. If you miss it, they deduct days from your payment.
DARDE renewal (sellado)
Failing to renew the demanda on the DARDE date will unregister you. If you are receiving payments, it can mean a sanction and losing one month of prestación on the first offence.
SEPE vs. servicio autonómico
The alta as demandante is done at the servicio público de empleo of your comunidad. The SEPE handles payments. Don’t mix them or you’ll queue twice.
Change of address or comunidad
If you move, transfer the demanda to the new comunidad. Otherwise they may summon you where you no longer live or unregister you for not attending.
Can I register online without going to the office?
In most comunidades, yes — with Cl@ve or a certificado digital. You complete the alta, sign and download the DARDE instantly.
Do I have to go through SEPE to sign up?
No. Signing up as a demandante is done at the servicio autonómico. You go to SEPE later only if you claim prestación or subsidio.
What deadline do I have if I was dismissed?
For the registration, as soon as possible. For requesting prestación at SEPE, 15 días hábiles from the day after the contract ended.
What happens if I don’t renew (seal) the DARDE?
You’re deregistered as a demandante. If you’re receiving payments, you get sanctioned: the first time is usually loss of 1 month of prestación; repeating is worse.
Can I register if I work part‑time?
Yes, as a mejora de empleo. State your real availability and the system will consider you for compatible offers.
Can I sign up without a NIE?
No. You need a NIE and, if you are non‑EU, authorisation to work. Without that they won’t register you.
