Guía completa
What you need to have to hand
- DARDE (be registered as a jobseeker at your regional employment service). Without this, nothing starts.
- DNI/NIE scanned (front and back).
- Employer certificates from recent jobs if they weren't sent via Certific@2.
- IBAN of an account in your name.
- Proof of your unemployment situation: end of contract, dismissal letter, conciliation act.
- Family and income documents if you're applying for subsidies (libro de familia, empadronamiento, payslips/IRPF, etc.).
Documentation
- Identity: DNI/NIE/passport.
- Jobseeker registration: your DARDE up to date.
- Legal unemployment proof: end of contract, dismissal, ERE, etc.
- Employer certificates: essential if not available to SEPE electronically.
- Bank account: IBAN where you want to receive payments.
- Dependants and income (only for subsidies): libro de familia/pareja de hecho, empadronamiento colectivo, household income documents.
Step by step
- Register as unemployed at your regional service (SOC/SAE/LABORA/Lanbide, etc.) and keep the DARDE. If you don't, they won't process anything.
- Go to sede.sepe.gob.es > Personas > Protección por desempleo > Pre‑solicitud de prestaciones. Avoid peak times (Monday mornings are a pain).
- Pick the reason: prestación contributiva, the right subsidio, or variation/other. Fill personal data and province/office.
- Attach documents: DNI/NIE, employer certificates, any proof the form asks for. Upload PDF/JPG files that are light (preferably <4 MB) and without tildes in the filename.
- Contact details: put a mobile and email you actually check. This is how they'll reach you. Send and download the receipt with the registration number.
- Wait for the appointment/call or instructions to sign the application (usually with Cl@ve if you want to complete it fully online). If you don't hear anything in 10–15 business days, call your office or check your file.
Time-saving tricks
- Send the pre‑application within the 15 business days. It fixes the start date and prevents losing entitlement days.
- Check if your employer already sent the certificates to SEPE (ask them if they used Certific@2). If not, upload them yourself.
- Scan properly: one clear PDF per document, legible, not a blurry photo. You avoid rejections.
- Browser: use Chrome or Firefox, disable blockers. The site is finicky.
- If you're going for a subsidy, have income proofs and empadronamiento ready. Some have a waiting month (after exhausting a previous benefit), don't get caught short.
Typical mistakes that will mess your application
- Confusing pre‑application with the official application: the pre‑application is NOT the payment trigger. The SEPE still needs the signed application.
- Forgetting the DARDE: without being registered as a jobseeker they halt the process.
- Not attaching all employer certificates: if you worked several jobs you need all of them. Missing one delays calculation.
- Missing the deadline: if you don't register within 15 business days you may lose days of benefit.
- Uploading huge files or filenames with odd characters: the upload fails and you end up without a registration. Use PDF/JPG, no tildes, <4 MB.
- Trying to use the pre‑application for ERTE: that’s not for you. ERTE is handled by the company; using this here only complicates the file.
- 1.You register as unemployed at your regional service (SOC/SAE/LABORA/Lanbide, etc.) and download the DARDE.
- 2.Go to sede.sepe.gob.es > Personas > Protección por desempleo > “Pre‑solicitud de prestaciones”.
- 3.Fill in your personal details, choose the type of help (prestación contributiva, subsidio, etc.) and select province/office.
- 4.Attach PDFs/JPGs of your DNI/NIE, employer certificates and any documents requested for your case (small files, avoid accents in filenames).
- 5.Give a phone number and email you actually check, submit and download the receipt with the registration number.
- 6.Wait for the SEPE call/appointment or instructions to sign the final application (usually with Cl@ve or in person). If you hear nothing in 10–15 business days, contact your office.
- DNI/NIE (front and back) or valid passport
- Inscripción como demandante de empleo (your DARDE from the regional employment service)
- Certificate(s) from employers for the last 180 days of contributions (if your employer didn’t send them via Certific@2)
- Bank account number (IBAN) in your name
- Dismissal letter/end-of-contract letter or conciliation act (proof of legal unemployment situation)
- Libro de familia or certificado de pareja de hecho if you have dependants (for subsidies that require it)
- Certificate of empadronamiento and proof of household income (only for subsidies with income limits)
15 business day deadline
For the prestación contributiva you have 15 business days from the end of the contract (or end of paid holidays). The pre‑application fixes the date, but you don't start receiving payments until you sign the official application.
Register as a jobseeker first
No DARDE, no benefit. Register at your regional employment service BEFORE you send the SEPE pre‑application.
Don't mix this up with ERTE
If your company put you on ERTE, don't use this pre‑application. The company handles ERTE; you just keep your demand for employment up to date.
Uploading documents
The SEPE site is picky: avoid files >4 MB, filenames with tildes or weird symbols and odd file formats. PDF/JPG works best.
Is the pre‑application already the official claim for unemployment?
No. It records your intent and protects the deadline, but the official application still needs signing — the SEPE will make you sign it (online with Cl@ve or at the office). There's no resolution or payment until then.
Do I need Cl@ve or a certificado digital for the pre‑application?
Usually you don't need them for the pre‑application. But to finish the application without going to the office you'll need Cl@ve/certificado. If you don't have them, they'll give you an appointment.
What if my employer doesn't send the employer certificate?
They may ask you to provide it. Request it and upload it. Without those details (contributions and bases) the SEPE can't calculate or approve your benefit.
How long until they call me or give me an appointment?
Usually between 5 and 15 business days. If your office is overloaded it can take 3–4 weeks. If there's no movement, chase the office or call SEPE.
I missed the 15 business days, can I still apply?
You can, but you may lose days of benefit. Submit the pre‑application as soon as possible: the registration date counts for entitlement.
Can I get paid if I have sporadic or part-time contracts?
It depends. If you work, payments may be suspended or partially compatible in certain cases. State it in the pre‑application and they'll adjust it during processing.
