Subsidy for insufficient contributions (Subsidio por insuficiencia de cotización) (SEPE)

SEPE rejects forms with a single mistake. We review your draft before submission.

If you’ve lost your job and don’t reach 360 days of contributions, this subsidy pays 80% of the IPREM for a time if you meet the rules. I’ll show you how to apply step by step so you don’t waste three pointless visits.

Guía completa

What you need
  1. To be in a legal situation of unemployment and have less than 360 days cotizados in the last 6 years.
  2. Registration as a job seeker (DARDE) in your autonomous service and a signed compromiso de actividad.
  3. Income limit: do not exceed 75% of the SMI in your own income. If you claim family responsibilities, you’ll need to prove them.
  4. Have contributed at least 3 months if you have cargas familiares, or 6 months if you don’t.
Documentation
  1. DNI/NIE/TIE in force.
  2. DARDE (registration and renewal date).
  3. Certificado(s) de empresa (SEPE normally sees them; if not, attach the PDF).
  4. Libro de familia or proof of cohabitation/pareja de hecho and disability certificates for children if applicable.
  5. IBAN of an account you hold.
  6. Proofs of income if requested (rents, pensions, interest, etc.).
Step by step
  1. Register as a job seeker at your autonomous service (SOC, Lanbide, SAE, etc.). Download the DARDE. Without this, SEPE won’t even look at your application.
  2. Go to https://sede.sepe.gob.es/PreSolicWeb/ and choose subsidio por insuficiencia de cotización. Identify yourself with Cl@ve.
  3. Fill in the pre-application: personal data, last employer, family responsibilities and bank account. Tick that you authorise checks with other administrations to avoid extra paperwork.
  4. Attach DNI/NIE, libro de familia and, if it doesn’t appear in the system, the certificado de empresa. Make sure everything is legible and in PDF.
  5. Submit within the 15 días hábiles. Keep the registration receipt (resguardo). If the online form misbehaves, book a cita at https://sede.sepe.gob.es/citaprevia/ and take everything in person.
  6. Check your expediente on SEPE’s site. If you get a requerimiento, upload the documents within the deadline. When granted, you’ll see the duration and the amount (80% IPREM).
Expert tips
  1. If the certificado de empresa is missing, push the employer to send it telemáticamente; it speeds up the decision a lot.
  2. SEPE’s site can fail with odd browsers: use Chrome and avoid afternoons. Upload PDFs under 5 MB.
  3. Renew the DARDE. If you miss it, suspension follows. Set a phone reminder.
  4. If you get a part-time contract, report it. It can be compatible with a proportional reduction; better to sort it than to have to repay money.
  5. If you received paid unused holidays in the settlement (finiquito), the deadline to apply starts when those days end.
Common mistakes
  1. Submitting late: they won’t deny you for it, but you lose days of payment. Bad move.
  2. Forgetting family responsibilities or not providing the libro de familia: you’ll get a shorter duration than you deserve.
  3. Not reporting income (rents, pensions) and exceeding 75% SMI: risk of sanction and repayment.
  4. Not renewing the demand: suspension and, if repeated, extinction.
  5. Uploading blurry photos instead of proper PDFs: they’ll request them again and everything is delayed.
  1. 1.Register as a job seeker with the autonomous employment service (SOC, Lanbide, SAE, etc.) and download the DARDE (registration and renewal date).
  2. 2.Go to https://sede.sepe.gob.es/PreSolicWeb/ and choose to apply for subsidio por insuficiencia de cotización; identify yourself with Cl@ve.
  3. 3.Fill in the application, tick if you have family responsibilities and upload DNI/NIE, libro de familia and the IBAN. Check whether the certificado de empresa appears; if not, attach it.
  4. 4.Submit within 15 días hábiles from the legal situation of unemployment and sign the compromiso de actividad.
  5. 5.If you can’t do it online, book an appointment at https://sede.sepe.gob.es/citaprevia/ and take the application and documents to your prestaciones office.
  6. 6.Check the status on the SEPE site (Consulta de prestaciones) and answer any requerimiento within the deadline given.
  • DNI or NIE and, if you’re a foreign national, TIE in force
  • DARDE (registration as job seeker) from the Servicio Público de Empleo of your autonomous community
  • Certificado(s) de empresa for the last contracts (they usually send these electronically to the SEPE; if it’s not in your file, provide your copy)
  • Libro de familia or certificado de pareja de hecho and, if relevant, disability certificates for children to prove family responsibilities
  • IBAN of a bank account you are the holder of (proof if they ask)
  • Proofs of income if requested (rents, pensions, interest…), to check you don’t exceed 75% of the SMI
