Prove right to healthcare (derechohabiencia) before the INSS
Retroactive registration: 60 days. After that, contributions are not recognised.
Use this to get recorded as having the right to healthcare in Spain as holder or beneficiary and to obtain/update the tarjeta sanitaria. Useful if you just arrived, changed work status or want to include children/partner.

- 1.Go to Tu Seguridad Social (sede.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/tuss) with Cl@ve or certificado and check if it already shows “Tienes derecho a asistencia sanitaria”.
- 2.If you don’t have NUSS, get it at importass.seg-social.es (Trámite: Asignación de Número de la Seguridad Social) before continuing.
- 3.Scan your documents to PDF (empadronamiento conjunto, Libro de familia/pareja, DNI/NIE, TIE, etc.). Make each document a clear, legible PDF.
- 4.Submit online the “Solicitud de reconocimiento del derecho a la asistencia sanitaria (INSS)” at sede.seg-social.gob.es > Ciudadanos > Asistencia sanitaria. Sign with Cl@ve or certificado and attach the PDFs.
- 5.If you prefer face-to-face, book a cita at sede.seg-social.gob.es > Ciudadanos > Cita Previa (INSS) and bring originals and copies.
- 6.When the INSS sends the resolución, take it to your centro de salud/servicio de salud autonómico so they can issue or update your tarjeta sanitaria.
