What to have to hand
- Certificado literal de defunción del Registro Civil.
- Your DNI/NIE and, if relevant, the deceased's.
- Funeral invoice and proof of payment in your name.
- Your IBAN and proof of account ownership.
- Libro de familia or marriage/civil partnership certificate (if you claim as a relative).
- If you do it without Cl@ve: an operational mobile to receive SMS.
Documentation
- Certificado literal de defunción.
- DNI/NIE of the applicant (and of the deceased, if requested).
- Invoice from the funeral home and proof of payment (transfer, card, bank receipt) in your name.
- Document of kinship, if applicable (Libro de familia, marriage/civil partnership certificate).
- IBAN and proof of ownership (bank certificate or receipt with your name).
- Representation/authorisation if you act for another person.
- Death abroad: consular certification and sworn translation.
Step by step
- Check you can prove you paid the funeral. Without that, there's no auxilio.
- With Cl@ve/Certificado, go to the Sede: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es and look for Prestaciones de supervivencia. Select Auxilio por defunción.
- Fill the form, mark Auxilio por defunción, attach legible PDFs (under 5 MB) and sign.
- Without Cl@ve, go to https://tramites.seg-social.es, choose Prestaciones de supervivencia and use the form without certificate. Attach everything and validate by SMS.
- In person: book a CAISS appointment here https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/sede/sede/Ciudadanos/cita-previa and bring originals and copies.
- Keep the registration receipt. Check status in Tu Seguridad Social (Sede) and wait for notification. If approved, they pay into your IBAN.
Time-savers
- Scan PDFs in black & white; compress if files are big.
- If the invoice isn't in your name but you paid, attach the bank charge showing your name and the concept.
- If several relatives are involved, agree who will claim it (only one person collects it: the payer).
- If you're in a hurry and there's no appointment, do it online even without Cl@ve using the form without certificate.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Funeral invoice without proof of payment. The invoice alone isn't enough.
- IBAN without proof of ownership. They'll stop it for “bank details not accredited”.
- Uploading blurry or unreadable photos. They'll request them again and you'll lose weeks.
- Claiming after 5 years. The right is prescribed.
- Expecting a big pay-out: it's 46,50 €. Don't be surprised at the end.
- 1.Gather everything: death certificate, funeral invoice and proof you paid it in your name, your DNI/NIE, proof of kinship (if applies) and your IBAN.
- 2.If you have Cl@ve, go to the Sede Electrónica de la Seguridad Social and look for “Prestaciones de supervivencia (auxilio por defunción)”: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es. Log in and select Auxilio por defunción.
- 3.Fill in the online form, attach the PDFs (black & white is fine, legible, under 5 MB each) and sign with Cl@ve/Certificado.
- 4.If you don't have Cl@ve, use the form without certificate at Trámites de la Seguridad Social: https://tramites.seg-social.es and choose Prestaciones de supervivencia. Complete the data, attach documents and validate by SMS.
- 5.If you prefer in person, book an appointment at a CAISS (INSS) here: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/sede/sede/Ciudadanos/cita-previa. On the appointment day hand in the application and copies; bring originals in case they want to check them.
- 6.Keep the registration receipt. Check status in Tu Seguridad Social (https://sede.seg-social.gob.es) or wait for the notification. If approved, payment arrives by transfer to your IBAN.
- Literal death certificate from the Registro Civil (original or electronic copy).
- DNI/NIE of the applicant and of the deceased (if foreign, passport and NIE).
- Invoice from the funeral service and proof of payment (card, transfer or receipt) in the name of the person claiming.
- Document proving kinship, if applicable (Libro de familia, marriage certificate or certificado de pareja de hecho).
- IBAN of the claimant's account and proof of account ownership (bank receipt or certificate).
- Formulario de solicitud de prestaciones de supervivencia del INSS cumplimentado (marcando Auxilio por defunción).
- If you act on behalf of someone else: signed authorisation or power of representation (and DNI of both).
- If the death was outside Spain: consular certification and sworn translation, if not in Spanish.
Prescription after 5 years
You have 5 years from the date of death to claim it. If you miss that, you lose the right.
