You get your NUSS if you've never had any relationship with the Seguridad Social. It identifies you in the system (useful for kids/students). For work it doesn't matter if the employer registers you and assigns the number directly.

What you need to have to hand
- ID: DNI if you're Spanish; if you're foreign, NIE/TIE or passport if you don't have a TIE yet.
- Mobile for SMS (Cl@ve via SMS) and email.
- If it's for a minor: Libro de familia or certificado literal de nacimiento and your DNI/NIE.
- If you changed details (name, nationality): Registro Civil certificate/resolution proving it.

- Passport if you only have a NIE assigned and haven't received your TIE yet.
- For minors: Libro de familia or certificado de nacimiento, and ID of the parent/guardian.
- If you act as a representative: simple authorisation and your ID.
Step by step
- Go to Import@ss: https://importass.seg-social.es/tramites/solicitar-numero-de-la-seguridad-social
- ID yourself with Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe. If you use SMS, make sure Cl@ve is activated.
- Fill in your personal and contact details. Tick that you never had a number if this is your first contact with SS.
- Attach the documents (DNI/NIE/TIE; for minors, libro de familia/certificado + parent x27;s DNI).
- Review and submit. If there are no issues, the NUSS is issued immediately and you can download proof.
- Go to Tu área personal > Datos personales and check your Número de la Seguridad Social. Download the certificate if you need it for other procedures.
Tricks that save you time
- Before doing anything, log into Import@ss and check if you already have a number. Many people have one from internships or studies and don't realise.
- If Safari gives you trouble with signing/attachments, use Chrome or Firefox. Fewer crashes.
- Keep photos/PDFs under 4 MB and legible. If not, they'll return it for "calidad insuficiente".
- If you don't have Cl@ve, register online with video or visit an office before starting. Saves pointless trips.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Requesting a new NUSS when you already have one: you create duplicates and then it takes weeks to unify numbers.
- Confusing NUSS with alta: the NUSS doesn't let you work; the alta must be filed by the employer.
- Uploading blurry documents: automatic rejection and back to square one.
- Forgetting proof of relationship when requesting for a minor: denial because representation isn't proven.
- Data mismatches (accents/dashes different from the DNI): manual review and delays.

- 2.Identify yourself with Cl@ve, certificado digital or DNIe. If you don't have one, use Cl@ve via SMS after registering in Cl@ve.
- 3.Fill in your basic details (name, address, mobile, email) and confirm you were never assigned a number before.
- 4.Attach the documents: DNI/NIE/TIE (and, if for a minor, libro de familia/certificado and your ID).
- 5.Submit the application and download/save the receipt. If everything checks out, you'll see the NUSS assigned on screen.
- 6.Check your NUSS in Import@ss > Tu área personal > Datos personales. There you can download a certificate of the number.
- Your DNI (if you're Spanish) or NIE/TIE (if you're foreign) scanned/photo legible on both sides
- Passport valid if you only have a NIE assigned and not a TIE yet
- Mobile phone with reception to receive SMS and an email address for notifications
- If you request it for your minor child: Libro de familia or certificado literal de nacimiento
- If you act as parent/guardian: your DNI/NIE and the document proving representation (signed authorisation)
- If you changed name or details: proof of the change (resolution, Registro Civil certificate)
Don't confuse NUSS with getting registered to work
NUSS identifies you, but it DOES NOT register you for social security (alta). To work you need the alta, which the company files. If you already worked before, you already have a number: don't open another one or you'll create duplicates.
Minors and representation
To request a minor's NUSS, attach libro de familia/certificado literal de nacimiento and your DNI/NIE. Without those, they'll reject it.
Duplicates = a pain
If you open two requests through different channels you can end up with two numbers. Fixing it (unificación de NAF/NUSS) is slow at TGSS. Before applying, search for your number in Import@ss > Datos personales.
¿Qué necesito para completar Solicitud de NUSS sin que me lo rechacen?
Solicitud de NUSS es gratuito en INSS / TGSS y se puede presentar por cuenta propia. El punto que interrumpe el trámite es que hace falta Cl@ve activa, y si no está dada de alta el registro previo puede tardar días. What is the difference between NUSS and NAF?
It's the same number. The name changes by context. If you've never contributed they call it NUSS; once you're in the contribution system you'll see it as NAF. There aren't two different numbers.
Can I request the NUSS without Cl@ve or certificado digital?
Yes. In Import@ss you can ID yourself via SMS if you register in Cl@ve with prior registration. Otherwise you must register Cl@ve first or go in person (slower).
How long do they take to issue it?
If you enter with Cl@ve/certificado and everything is clear, it comes out immediately. If documents need checking (minors, doubtful data) it usually takes 1-5 días hábiles.
Can I request the NUSS for my newborn?
Yes. You can do it by attaching libro de familia or certificado literal de nacimiento and your DNI/NIE. They'll assign it and you can then apply for benefits and the health card.
Can I be fined for working without NUSS?
The employer must register you (and if you don't have a number, they assign it). Fines fall on the company for not registering. You still get into trouble if you accept work without being registered.
I think I already have a number from an internship, how do I check?
Go to Import@ss > Tu área personal > Datos personales and check your Número de la Seguridad Social. If it appears, don't request another. You can also download a certificate of the number there.
