When do you need to renew your DNI?
The validity period of the DNI depends on the holder's age:

|---|---|
| Under 5 years | 2 years |
| 5 to 14 years | 5 years |
| 14 to 30 years | 10 years |
| Over 30 years | 10 years |
| Over 70 years | Permanent |
You should also renew if:
- Your appearance has changed significantly
- There are errors in your data
- You are about to travel and your document expires soon
Required documents for renewal
- Current DNI (expired or about to expire)
- Recent colour photograph with white background, no glasses (32×26 mm)
- Fee paid: €12 (free for victims of domestic violence or terrorism)
If your personal details have changed (name after marriage, etc.), additional documentation will be needed.
How to book an appointment
- Go to citapreviadnie.es
- Select your province and the Police Station or Document Office
- Choose an available date and time
- Note down your confirmation code
You can book an appointment for the whole family at once (one appointment per person).
On the day of renewal
- Arrive a few minutes before your appointment
- Have all your documents ready
- The renewal typically takes 10–20 minutes
- In many offices the DNI is issued the same day or within 24 hours
Electronic DNI (DNIe)
The new DNI includes an electronic chip that enables:
- Digital identification for online procedures (electronic government, taxes, etc.)
- Electronic document signing
- Authentication with a digital certificate
To activate the DNIe you need a smart card reader or a mobile device with NFC.
