When to renew your DNI

The Spanish National Identity Document (DNI) must be renewed when it expires, when your personal details change, or when the photo no longer resembles you. In Madrid, you must book an appointment at one of the National Police stations that process DNI renewals.

How to book an appointment

Required documents

1. Current DNI (even if expired)
2. Recent colour photograph — 32×26mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
3. Fee payment — €12 in 2026 (paid via Form 790 at a bank or at the office by card)
4. Proof of address (only if your registered address has changed)

The DNI renewal fee in 2026 is €12. You can pay at any collaborating bank using Form 790 code 012, or by card at the police station.
