- 1.Go to the MAPA page and check country-specific extra requirements: https://www.mapa.gob.es/es/ganaderia/temas/sanidad-animal-higiene-ganadera/sanidad-animal/enfermedades/rabia/desplazamientos.aspx
- 2.Check your pet has an ISO 11784/11785 microchip and the rabies vaccine is valid. If not, arrange chip implantation and the rabies vaccine (first rabies dose requires waiting 21 days before travel).
- 3.Book an appointment at an authorised veterinary clinic to issue the “Pasaporte para animales de compañía de la Unión Europea” (call and ask for passports; most colegiado clinics do them).
- 4.Go to the appointment with the pet and your DNI. The vet will scan the microchip, enter your and the pet's details, stick the microchip and vaccine labels, sign and stamp the passport.
- 5.Pay for the passport at the clinic and take it with you. If travelling to Finland/Ireland/Malta/Norway with a dog, return 1–5 days before travel so they can note the anti‑echinococcus treatment with stamp and time.
- 6.Before flying or boarding, check rabies dates and, if applicable, deworming dates are within the required window. Some airlines ask for a recent health certificate: check and, if needed, get it at the same clinic.
