What you need to have on hand

1. Microchip ISO 11784/11785 implanted and registered in your name in the regional registry (appears on the chip card or in REIAC/regional register).
2. Valid rabies vaccination. Watch the expiry date; if it lapses, you start a new 21‑day clock.
3. DNI/NIE of the holder you want listed in the passport.
4. Pet details: name, breed, date of birth, sex and colour.

Documentation

• Proof of microchip (number and registration entry).
• Rabies vaccination certificate with brand, batch and date.
• Booklet or medical record (if you already had one, for copying data).
• Anti-echinococcus deworming (dogs only and only if going to FI/IE/MT/NO): between 24 and 120 hours before arrival and recorded in the passport.

Step by step

1. Check requirements on the MAPA website: countries with extra rules and timeframes. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
2. If you lack a chip or valid rabies, book an appointment and get them done at your clinic. If it's the first rabies, note the date: you can't travel for 21 days.
3. Book a passport appointment at an authorised vet (ask explicitly for “pasaporte europeo”). Most colegiado clinics issue them.
4. Go with the pet and your DNI. They'll read the chip, fill the little book, stick microchip and vaccine labels, and stamp and sign it.
5. Pay and take the passport. Check your name, chip number, vaccine and dates are correct. Any mistake can stop you at control.
6. If your destination requires it, return 24–120 h before travel so they can record the anti‑echinococcus deworming (dogs to FI/IE/MT/NO).
7. Check the airline/transport rules: some demand a health certificate issued 24–48 h before travel; if so, get it at the same clinic.

Time‑saving tips

• Revaccinate before expiry: so the 21‑day clock doesn't start again.
• Bring the chip card: speeds up filling and avoids number errors.
• Check the scanner at the clinic: make sure the chip reads first time. If your chip isn't ISO, ask about a compatible reader.
• Photograph the passport (data and vaccines). If it gets lost, a duplicate is easier with a copy.
• Confirm destination rules (FI/IE/MT/NO): ask for the deworming at the same pre‑travel check.

Common mistakes that can ruin the process

1. Vaccinating before implanting the microchip: that vaccine won’t count for travel and you'll need to revaccinate.
2. Letting the rabies vaccine lapse: it resets the clock (21 days) and can wreck your trip.
3. Typos in details (chip number, holder name, birth date): border control won’t be forgiving.
4. Forgetting the mandatory deworming if going to FI/IE/MT/NO with a dog: you may be denied entry.
5. Thinking there’s an online passport: there isn’t. If someone sells you one without a vet's stamp and signature, it won’t be valid.
6. Not updating the chip holder: if regional registry and passport don’t match, you can be stopped at the border.
