What you need to have to hand
- DNI/NIE of the policyholder.
- Número de microchip of the dog (shown in the cartilla veterinaria).
- Cartilla veterinaria and up-to-date vaccinations.
- Address where the dog lives and contact (mobile/email).
- IBAN or card to pay.
- If you plan to use your seguro del hogar, ask for a certificado with the microchip and capital ≥ 120.000 €.
Documentation
- Identification of the policyholder: number and expiry of the DNI/NIE.
- Identification of the animal: exact microchip, breed/size and date of birth.
- Cartilla veterinaria: they may ask for it for manual checks.
- Risk address: where the dog normally stays.
- Claims history: if there were previous incidents.
- Payment method: IBAN or card for the annual premium.
Step by step
- Check the microchip in the cartilla. Without a chip, some insurers won’t quote you.
- Search the product on your insurer’s/bank’s website: “RC perros” or “Seguro de mascotas (solo RC)”.
- Fill in details for the policyholder and the dog: microchip, breed/size, age, address and past claims.
- Choose cover: minimum 120.000 €; add defensa jurídica if it’s not included; avoid high franquicias.
- Check exclusions: excluded breeds, mandatory muzzle/leash, professional use not covered, damage to cohabitants not covered.
- Pay and download the policy and the certificate with microchip. Save it on your phone and email.
- Municipal register: if your ayuntamiento requires it, upload the certificate when registering the dog (for example, Madrid via sede.madrid.es, they request policy and paid receipt).
Time-savers
- Ask for the certificate from minute one; many sites generate it when you pay.
- Compare capitals: sometimes 150.000 € costs the same as 120.000 €.
- If you have home RC, get confirmation in writing that it includes your dog by microchip and the legal capital. If not, buy a specific RC policy.
- Auto-renewal: set a reminder one month before renewal in case you want to switch.
Common mistakes that mess up the process
- Trusting home insurance without a microchip certificate: at a check or claim they can treat you as uninsured.
- Choosing a high franquicia: you save a few euros a year and then pay the bill yourself when something happens.
- Policy “under review”: if you don’t have an issued certificate, don’t assume coverage.
- Capital under 120.000 €: doesn’t meet the law.
- Not checking exclusions: no leash/muzzle where required can mean no cover.
- 1.Check the microchip number in the cartilla and that the dog is correctly identified.
- 2.Go to your insurer’s website (or your bank’s) and search for “Responsabilidad civil perros” or “Seguro RC mascotas”. Online purchase.
- 3.Fill in the policyholder and dog details: microchip, breed/size, date of birth, address and previous claims.
- 4.Choose a coverage capital of at least 120.000 € (better 150.000 € if they offer it for the same price). Avoid high excesses and verify it covers all of Spain.
- 5.Pay the annual premium and download the policy and the insurance certificate that shows the dog’s microchip. Keep it on your phone.
- 6.If your town hall asks for it for the dog register, upload the certificate. Example: in Madrid, the dog census is done at sede.madrid.es (they attach policy and paid receipt).
- DNI or NIE of the policyholder (number and expiry date)
- Dog's microchip number (appears in the cartilla veterinaria)
- Cartilla veterinaria with the animal’s data and up-to-date vaccinations
- Full address where the dog lives (domicilio habitual)
- History of previous claims (if your dog has caused insured damage before)
- IBAN for direct debit or card for payment
- If you’ll use your home insurance: the policy certificate showing the dog by microchip and the minimum capital of 120.000 €
It’s mandatory for all dogs
Ley 7/2023 requires RC insurance with a minimum cover of 120.000 €. Being uninsured can bring fines (amounts vary with the offence classification and the damage caused).
Watch the home insurance
Many home policies exclude specific breeds or set limits below 120.000 €. It only counts if they issue a nominative certificate with the dog’s microchip and the required minimum capital.
Certificate with microchip or it won’t save you
If the policy does not identify the dog by its microchip number, you can be treated as ‘uninsured’ during an inspection or claim.
Coverage active from issue/payment
If the policy is ‘subject to acceptance’ or ‘under review’, don’t assume you’re covered. Make sure you have the issued certificate and the paid receipt.
Is it mandatory for all dogs, even small well-behaved ones?
Yes. Ley 7/2023 requires it for all dog owners. Size or breed doesn’t matter: minimum 120.000 € RC cover.
Does my home insurance count?
Only if it includes RC for dogs with the minimum capital of 120.000 € and you can get a certificate showing the dog’s microchip. Many policies exclude breeds or set low limits, so get it in writing.
How long to get the certificate?
Online it’s usually immediate after payment. Some companies email it in minutes; if they check details it can take a few hours.
Can I be fined if I don’t have it?
Yes. Not having the mandatory insurance can lead to a financial penalty. Also, if your dog causes damage you’ll pay out of pocket and then fight with insurers later.
Does it cover bites in the street or park?
Yes. RC covers damage to third parties in private life, usually across Spain. If you breach rules (no leash/muzzle where required), the insurer can reduce or deny the claim.
I have two dogs, do I need two policies?
Depends on the insurer. Many let you include several dogs in one policy, adding them by microchip and increasing the premium per dog.
Which capital should I choose, 120.000 € or more?
120.000 € is the legal minimum. If for a small extra cost you can boost to 150.000 € or 300.000 €, do it. Serious claims add up fast.
