Guía completa

What to have ready
  1. DNI o NIE of the holder, valid.
  2. Cl@ve PIN/Permanente, certificado digital or DNIe if you do it online.
  3. Libro de familia if you need a volante colectivo with minors.
  4. Autorización signed + copy of the DNI of the holder if someone else will request it in your name.
  5. A decent browser (Chrome/Firefox). If the sede uses signing, have AutoFirma installed.
Documentation
  • Identification: DNI/NIE of the holder. For online requests, your identification method (Cl@ve/certificado/DNIe).
  • Household: libro de familia to include minors in a volante colectivo.
  • Representation (only if applicable): simple authorization and DNI of the holder + DNI of the person submitting.
  • Destination accreditation: some ayuntamientos ask you to indicate the organismo destino (e.g. “SEPE”, “Colegio X”). It’s usually just informational if you don’t know it.
Step by step
  1. Find the trámite on your sede: go to your ayuntamiento's sede and search “Volante de empadronamiento”. Examples: Madrid (https://sede.madrid.es), Barcelona (https://seuelectronica.ajuntament.barcelona.cat).
  2. Identify yourself with Cl@ve PIN/Permanente, certificado digital or DNIe. If you don't have Cl@ve: register at https://clave.gob.es (registration is quick if you use video or the letter option).
  3. Choose the type of volante:
    • Individual (just you).
    • Colectivo (everyone registered at the address; they may ask for libro de familia if there are minors).
    • Histórico (if your ayuntamiento offers it, to see past registrations/changes).
  4. Fill the minimum fields: confirm the address, mark the organismo destino if requested and accept data protection clause.
  5. Generate and download the PDF with CSV (Código Seguro de Verificación). Check address and date are correct. Keep the CSV in case they validate it online.
  6. Plan B in person: if the sede misbehaves or you don't have Cl@ve, book a cita: Madrid (https://www.madrid.es/citaprevia) or Barcelona (https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/cita). Bring DNI/NIE and, for colectivo, the libro de familia. You'll leave with the printed volante on the spot.
Time-saving tips
  1. Get it the same day they ask for it: many calls require it to be less than 3 months old.
  2. If the site requires signing the request, use Chrome/Firefox and have AutoFirma ready. Switching browser often fixes dumb errors.
  3. If you registered yesterday, wait 24–72 h before trying to download; the padrón needs a bit to update.
  4. If it's for extranjería/court, check whether they want a certificado; don't waste time with a volante if they'll reject it.
  5. Applying for large family, scholarship or school? A colectivo usually covers it; avoid a second trip.
Common mistakes that can ruin the trámite
  1. Mixing up volante and certificado: volante is free and fast; certificado is different (may have a fee and needs an appointment).
  2. Finicky browser: Safari or extensions can block downloads. Try incognito mode or switch to Chrome/Firefox.
  3. No authorization if a third party goes: without authorization and DNI copies they will turn you away.
  4. Asking for individual when they want colectivo: if they need proof of cohabitation, request colectivo from the start.
  5. Old volante: they can reject it if it's over 3 months. Make a new one — it's 2 minutes online.
  1. 1.Go to the sede electrónica of your ayuntamiento and search for “Volante de empadronamiento” (examples: Madrid https://sede.madrid.es, Barcelona https://seuelectronica.ajuntament.barcelona.cat).
  2. 2.Identify yourself with Cl@ve PIN/Permanente, certificado digital or DNIe (if you don't have one, register at https://clave.gob.es).
  3. 3.Choose the type of volante: individual, colectivo (cohabitants) or histórico if your ayuntamiento offers it.
  4. 4.Enter the destination if they ask for it (the organismo that requires it) and confirm the address details.
  5. 5.Download the PDF with Código Seguro de Verificación (CSV) and save it. Print it only if they require a paper copy.
  6. 6.If you can't do it online or the web fails, book a presencial appointment at your ayuntamiento (Madrid: https://www.madrid.es/citaprevia, Barcelona: https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/cita) and they will give it to you on the spot with your DNI.
