Temporary deregistration (baja temporal) of your vehicle at the DGT

What you should have at hand

1. Vehicle details: registration number (matrícula), VIN (bastidor).
2. ID: DNI/NIE or certificado digital/Cl@ve to sign online.
3. Tasa DGT 4.1: if it's not a theft case. Buy it on the sede and keep the tasa number.
4. Denuncia: only if the baja is for sustracción (this saves you the fee).
5. Private place to store the car/motorbike. On the street is a bad idea.

Documentation

• DNI/NIE del titular (or CIF + poder if it's a company).
• Permiso de circulación and tarjeta ITV (if you go in person, bring the originals in case they want to check them).
• Justificante de pago Tasa 4.1 (not needed if you attach a denuncia por robo).
• Autorización and DNI of the authorised person if you are not doing it yourself (or use apoderamiento electrónico).
• If there's a precinto judicial, you must get the levantamiento first. With an embargo they can process it but the debt remains.

Step by step

1. Buy Tasa 4.1 (if applicable): sede DGT > Pago de tasas > Compra de tasas. Keep the tasa number.
2. Request the baja temporal online: open the trámite page, identify with Cl@ve/certificado and choose baja temporal.
3. Attach the required files: denuncia if it's theft. Keep PDFs/JPGs light (preferably <5 MB each).
4. Sign and confirm. If there's a fee, link it with the tasa number. Download the justificante with date and time.
5. If you go to an office, book a cita previa and bring DNI, permiso, ficha ITV, the tasa receipt and denuncia if needed. They'll process it at the counter.
6. Store the vehicle in a garage or private land and tell your insurer if you plan to suspend the policy.

Time-saving tricks

• Buy the Tasa 4.1 before starting the trámite and keep the number ready.
• If the sede misbehaves, try Chrome/Firefox and disable blockers. Upload small files.
• If it was stolen, attach the denuncia and avoid paying the fee.
• Set a reminder to renew before the 12 months are up. If you don't, the alta can return and you'll face IVTM/insurance bills.
• If you're managing it for a relative, set up an apoderamiento electrónico and skip paper authorisations.

Common mistakes that will mess up the trámite

1. Leaving the car on the street after deregistration: you'll get a fine and maybe a tow.
2. Forgetting the one-year expiry: automatic reactivation and the obligations return.
3. Uploading huge files: the sede can fail and you won't be able to sign. Compress files.
4. Not checking for judicial seals: if there's a precinto judicial they won't process anything until it's lifted.
5. Assuming you'll get the IVTM back by default: baja temporal normally doesn't trigger an IVTM refund.
