What you need to have to hand

- DNI/NIE valid.
- Bank card or account to pay the Tasa 2.3.
- Dirección postal en España where you will receive the card.

- Foto digital tipo DNI if the system asks for it (not always required).

Step by step
- Go to the Sede: https://sede.dgt.gob.es and open Permisos de conducir > Duplicados (also from the miDGT app: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/aplicaciones/midgt/).
- Choose reason (loss, theft, damage or data change) and confirm delivery address.
- Attach the denuncia (if theft) and the documents for data change (if applicable). If the system doesn’t have a valid photo, it will ask for a foto digital.
- Pay the Tasa 2.3 inside the procedure. If the payment gateway leaves you hanging, buy the tasa at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/pago-de-tasas/ and then enter the tasa number to assign it.
- Finish and download the permiso provisional. Print it or keep it on your phone. It only covers you inside Spain.
- Wait for the postal delivery of the card (1–4 weeks is common). If they call you to Jefatura for photo/signature, book cita previa: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/cita-previa-jefaturas/.
Tips that save time
- If your licence expires in ≤ 3 months, do a renewal instead of a duplicate. Same work, but you come out with a new expiry date.
- The DGT website can be fussy with cookies. Log out, clear cache or use incognito if the payment hangs.
- Buy the Tasa 2.3 separately only if the procedure’s gateway fails; then assign it quickly using its tasa number.
- If you don’t have a valid photo and have to go to Jefatura, take a recent photo just in case they ask for one there.
Typical mistakes that can derail your process
- Requesting a duplicate for change of address: unnecessary. The address is not on the licence.
- Ignoring the expiry date: duplicating a licence that’s about to expire is a waste if you don’t renew.
- Relying on the provisional outside Spain: it’s not valid. Don’t travel expecting it to replace the card.
- Having the licence suspended or without points: the duplicate will be refused and the tasa is not refunded.
- Uploading blurry or shadowed documents: they can request them again and you lose weeks.

- 2.Choose the reason (loss, theft, damage or data change) and confirm your delivery address.
- 3.Attach the denuncia if it was stolen and the proof of data change if it applies; if the Sede requests it, upload a digital photo.
- 4.Pay the Tasa 2.3 by card or direct debit inside the procedure; if the payment gateway fails, buy the tasa at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/tramites-y-multas/pago-de-tasas/ and enter the tasa number in the form.
- 5.Finish and download the permiso provisional to drive in Spain while the physical card arrives.
- 6.Receive the physical licence by post at the address you gave. Watch your mailbox over the next weeks.

The provisional is only valid in Spain
You can drive with the provisional inside Spain. Abroad, you can be fined for not having the physical licence.
If it expires soon, renew instead
If your licence expires in the near future (about 3 months), do a renewal rather than a duplicate. You pay a similar fee and extend the validity.
Suspension/loss of validity
If your licence is suspended or withdrawn for points, the duplicate will be denied and you lose the tasa. Check your status in miDGT before paying.
Change of address doesn't need a duplicate
The address is not printed on the licence. Don’t pay for a duplicate just because you’ve moved.
They may call you to Jefatura for photo/signature
If they don’t have a valid photo, they’ll call you to Jefatura and you’ll need cita previa: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/cita-previa-jefaturas/.
¿Qué necesito para completar Duplicado por Pérdida sin que me lo rechacen?
Duplicado por Pérdida es gratuito en DGT y se puede presentar por cuenta propia. El punto que interrumpe el trámite es que hace falta Cl@ve activa, y si no está dada de alta el registro previo puede tardar días. Además, el formulario tiene 5 pasos y la sesión de la sede caduca antes de terminar si se interrumpe. Can I drive while I wait for the duplicate?
Yes, with the provisional you download at the end. Note: it’s only valid in Spain. Carry it printed or on your phone plus your ID.
Is a denuncia necessary if my licence was stolen?
Not mandatory for the DGT, but highly recommended. It creates a formal record and avoids problems if someone uses your details.
Can I request the duplicate from abroad?
You can do the procedure online, but the provisional is not valid outside Spain and the physical card is sent to an address in Spain.
How much does the duplicate cost?
You pay the Tasa DGT 2.3. The amount changes yearly; you see it in the Sede payment gateway. There is no fee if you don’t request a duplicate for change of address.
I found the licence after requesting the duplicate. What now?
The old one is cancelled. Destroy it and use the new one when it arrives. Keep the provisional until you have the card.
Is duplicating or renewing cheaper if mine is about to expire?
If it’s expiring soon, renew. You pay a similar fee and get full new validity. Duplicating does not extend the expiry date.
